HK is a famous city of fashion, city of freedom, city of integrity, city of tourism, but always not related to culture or arts. But recently, more and more people in Hong Kong care about the development of arts and culture of Hong Kong. There are more and more arts and cultural events held by different organizations. Graffiti is one of them. There are now many Graffiti by International artists in HK now. Today, Let me bring you to Sheung Wan to visit a few of them.

Sheung Wan is one of the earliest developed district in HK and is full of the history and style of the colony HK. At the same time, the art spirit of the place become stronger. We may see a lot of street art in Sheung Wan.

In around 1 hour walk, I found almost 100 graffiti! It is because the organization “HKWalls”.

HKWalls is a non-profiting organization in HK aiming at promotion the arts and culture of Graffiti. Starting from 2014, HKWalls organizes the “HKWalls Festival” every year and invite artists from HK and all over the world. They will choose a district in HK and leave their graffiti art works. According to HK regulation, graffiti in Public or Private area is committing crime. But HKWalls communicate with the owners of shops, buildings and get their permission. 2015 is the year of HKWalls Festival in Sheung Wan and 39 artists from 15 countries left their arts works in Sheung Wan.

SZABOTAGE’s Graffiti

DSC02551.jpg

Art work of SZABOTAGE. He made the wall becoming funny and wonderful by the graffiti. This is one of the target of street art to improve the environment by arts and let people enjoy art from anywhere.

Rukkit’s Graffiti

DSC02549.jpg

Cat Time Biatch’s Graffiti

DSC02541.jpg

Art work of Cat Time Biatch. Most of her art works are 4-eyes girls with a single color tone. The cat in the graffiti is the “Asshole Cat”

KristopherH’s Graffiti

DSC02550.jpg

Art work of KristopherH. The style is called the Maximalism. It require advanced techniques to finish the art work.

Xeva’s Graffiti

DSC02556.jpg

Art work of Xeva. And it is Bruce Lee!

In the early time, graffiti was not a good thing in many people’s eyes. But now graffiti is already a kind of arts. Unfortunately, graffiti is still not allowed in many countries. HK is one of them and the HK government do not support graffiti arts. Now it is better just because the hard work of the civil organizations. In other countries of Asia, the development of graffiti arts is better and better. There are many events and competitions of graffiti. Even the government open some area for graffiti. But in HK, there is still nothing. Luckily there are still some enterprises knowing the trend of graffiti and invite lot of international graffiti artists to HK, letting us to enjoy great graffiti arts works in HK.

At the end, I want to share that, HK is actually the earliest region starting develop graffiti culture in Asia. In the 1990’s, MC Yan, Father of HK Hip Hop, already brought the culture of graffiti from USA to HK. He was even named as the “first person of graffiti in Asia” by TIMES Magazine. 20 years passed, there seems nothing for the development in HK.

There are still many examples like I.T., smartcard payment, movie entertainment. HK is in the leading role of Asia. But now, already caught up by other cities. What happen to HK. When will HK stop staying in one piece?

Again, a video for you!

yeah I will!
