Bridge Street is not a famous street. I am sure there is no tourist guide in the world talking about Bridge Street. Even many people living in HK do not know the street. And I would like to say, you can never believe there are such a lot of histories and stories in this 300 meters’ street.
Bridge Street is at the mountainside of Sheung Wan. To the east is PMG, to the west is Tai Ping Shan Street, to the north is Wing Lee Street. The three streets are full of the stories of arts and history. So Bridge Street must be one of them. There are quite a lot of interesting story in Bridge Street.
For the stories of the three streets, please check:

Chinese YMCA of HK Bridge Street Centre
I entered Bridge Street from Tai Ping Shan Street. The first in my sight was a building in red bricks. It is the Chinese YMCA of HK Bridge Street Centre. It was built in 1918 with the architecture style of Chinese and British. It was the first YMCA Centre in HK. It was the headquarter of YMCA in HK. It was the first public hall and stadium in HK. It had the first indoor swimming pool of HK and also the first indoor playground of HK. In 1927, Lu Xun, leading figure of modern Chinese Literature had his speech in the Centre. It is also the 10 most haunted place in HK.

In 1941 when Japan invading HK, the YMCA Centre became one of the main center of the Air Raid Precaution. Many young people stayed at the Centre and fought. Later Japan takeover HK and the Centre became a school and barracks. After the surrender of Japan in 1945, many Japanese soldiers killed themselves in the Centre. Then, somethings strange happened……
In the 1950s, the Government built housing in Bridge Street. But When the residents moved in, they always heard of some marching footsteps at midnight. And there were sound of weeping came out of the YMCA Centre. Some residents even said that they saw shadow of people marching in the Centre. Since then the Centre became the 10 most haunted place in HK. Believe it or not? It’s up to you……
The Church of Christ in China China Congregational Church
Next to the YMCA Centre is the The Church of Christ in China China Congregational Church (CCC). It is green building with Gothic architecture style built in 1901. The current CCC is nothing special but it’s original one, located in another side of the Street, was an important church in the history of HK. Mr. Sun Yat-sen, Father of the Nation and first president of the Republic of China, was baptized in the Church. It was 1883. In the coming 3 years, Sun lived in the hostel of the Church.

The original CCC is now a public market.

Something funny is that, after the revolution of China, Sun came back to HK and had a speech in Hong Kong University in 1923. He said, “My revolutionary ideas are totally coming from HK.”. 4 years late, Mr. Lu Xun had his speech in the YMCA HK Bridge Street Centre. At the moment, HK was still the world of ancient Chinese literature. The leaders of Chinese literature in HK tried to hide the news of Lu Xun coming HK. They even tried to insult Lu when he came HK. It made Lu having a very bad impression of HK. Two great people of China have a totally different impression of HK. Sometimes I would think that if they met in the Bridge Street, what will their conversation be?
Select 18
All stories have gone now. Bridge Street is now a common street. But there is still something special in the street. There is a store called “Select 18”. It is a vintages store, a great vintages store. You may find a lot of old goods from the 1950s to 1980s like books, magazines, toys, decorations, cameras, telephones, etc. The most attractive for me is a old black and White TV. It’s really my first time to see a B&W TV! I am sure you will be able to find something you like in the store.
Our society is formed by stories, the stories of history. No one can imagine a normal street contains such interesting stories. The stories can still be told is because the old buildings are still here. But the society keeps changing. And stories keep losing. Sometimes, I will think if it is really necessary to keep rebuilding our society? Is there any space to slow it and let us save our stories, our histories?
Again, a video for you!
