The Beauty of Chinese

in cn •  8 years ago

I have been studying Chinese for over a year now, and I have to say there's something about it that makes it so beautiful. Obviously, the tones that make you sound like you're singing are unique (when your native language is English), and the characters are exotic, but it's something beyond that. And I only put my finger on it recently-it's the density of information. For example, if you want to ask somebody if they're hungry, you would say: 你很饿吗?(ni hun uh ma?) If you wanted to say yes, you would say 饿 (uh). But if you want to indicate that you've only recently become hungry, you would say 饿了(uh luh). It seems unremarkable and quite dull, but think about how many more words you would have to say if you were speaking English. It's compact and easy to remember. I just wanted to share that.

That's not the Manderin I've been learning. Which dialect is that?

I see a lot of American come to China and learn Chinese very well in just one or two years. But it's difficult for a Chinese to speak fluent English in one year with zero basis.
