Chinese New Year has changed.

Chinese New Year is just 3 weeks away. To build the mood, I want to share with you a weird thing (well, that's what my parents said) that I like to do during this period.

Back when we were younger, during the month before Chinese New Year, every family would be very busy cleaning their house, buying new clothes, pants and shoes, baking cookies, and parents often brought their children to the morning market to buy firecrackers. Black coloured cloths and jeans with holes were not allowed during Chinese New Year period.

Nowadays however, the sound of fire crackers are almost unheard. New clothes, pants, and shoes for Chinese New Year are no longer necessary. You will also see youngsters wearing black cloths during Chinese New Year, no one seems to care about it. Once the clock strikes 12 am on the first day of Chinese New Year, no friends nor relatives even call to wish us “GongXiFaCai”. It has been instead replaced by digital wishes of “GongXiFaCai” in WhatsApp.

There are many things that have changed. For me, the most obvious change is the Chinese New Year songs. Since I was a kid, I have had a special interest in Chinese New Year songs. Local artists from MY ASTRO always do a great job by introducing new Chinese New Year songs every year. It’s very modern, easy to sing along and with meaningful lyrics. However, for me, it lacks some of the Chinese New Year feel that older songs had.

During Chinese New Year period, sometimes I like to listen to the classic Chinese New Year songs of old. I am not referring to songs from 龙飘飘 or林淑容 era, but from a much older era. I think not many people have heard of these songs now. Even my parents feel that my taste of Chinese New year songs is a little weird.

Actually, the older Chinese New Year songs are very unique. For example, the song 《恭喜恭喜》by 姚莉and姚敏.The only musical instrument used was a guitar. When listening to this song, I feel like I am celebrating Chinese New Year in Hawaii.

Another example is the song 《向王小二拜年》by 白光.This Chinese New Year song has an almost Christmas feel to it. The first part of the song is similar to Jingle Bells!

The world is changing every day, and we have no choice but to follow the trend. The only thing in this world that doesn’t change, is ‘CHANGE’. Things from different era are not outdated, you simply need to change your perception, and you will discover something very special thing in them.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Haha we listen to the same type of cny songs. But once a while need those long piao piao type also cos very lively. The yao li ones reminds me of first day cny at my grandparents home.
Speaking of customs, it is really very much up to us to practise and introduce them to the younger ones. Perhaps some good explanation will help. I’d like to stick to some of these customs otherwise once no one practise them cny will be just another public holiday. But strange thing is we tend to appreciate some things more when we get older :)

I have been thinking, those once-a-year relatives perhaps I won't know they are my relatives if I bump them on the street. Parents are the only linkage in between. One day when parents are old, the linkage will break.

Those must be really distant ones. Like yr father’s cousins. Yes sad the linkage will break. Tht’s why cny is best spent with family and friends instead of travelling. That’s the once a year chance to meet everyone!

On another note, i heard the customs in malaysia is actually better preserved compared to places like taiwan and even china. Do u know if it’s true?

Agree. Cny is no longer the same as previously. And if a married woman not celebrating with her own family like she used to be over the past 20-30years, her cny will be totally different too. Not complaining, but just love the old cny feelings with my own family. Always missing my parents badly whenever listen to cny songs.

Understand you totally. My wife does not have reunion dinner with her family for the past 10 years. This year I am going to do something special. Reunion dinner at her hometown on CNY eve. Will gonna have reunion dinner with my family one day before.

How nice! Yes I know some family practise in this way too. Shall do arrangement like this in future🙌☺️

The second songs intro reminds me of the song House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. See if you get me on this.

Wow... yes i got you! haha

change is definitely bound to happen

Hmmm.. 。

That's very true, I miss the firecrackers and old songs too. At least one thing that has not changed much is the food and Angpao..hahaha.. Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Nowadays reunion dinner many people choose to eat at the restaurant rather than preparing themselves d. I like the feeling where relatives gather together and prepare the reunion dinner. while the kids are playing and screaming in the house. Those are CNY voices. haha

Happy Chinese New Year! Can't wait to go home for reunion with my family :D

Happy CNY! Yeah, the only thing we really looking for!

I can't deny that times have changed so much. Now it is another holiday with long jams on the highway (on top of the non-stop necessarily long hols Malaysians observe).
It felt "less festive" somehow, as years goes by. However, I'm still warmed up inside when I see my friends' postings on CNY - the card playings, the food, the family portrait. There are some who still make time for this tradition. :D

PS: Thks for sharing the CNY songs. Bought back memories! :D
