This crossword #puzzle provides vocabulary practice for students of #Mandarin Chinese at lower intermediate and higher levels (#HSK 2 or 3+). The clues (mostly definitions, a few deliberately vague) are written in an easily accessible style. They are presented in traditional and simplified Chinese characters. The answers, written in GR Tonal Spelling, are selected from a topical word list shown after the clues as a source of extra hints

Note that syllables written in #pinyin have a limited range of possible spellings. For example：『敲、橋、巧、翹 = QiAO in all four #tones (false #homonyms). Because toneless pinyin does not show tonal differences, constructing ASCII-only #crosswords with interlocking words is more difficult.

GR Tonal Spelling, which combines semivowels and tones wherever possible (dual-use vowel letters), has a greater variety of spellings （ #grtonalspelling：『敲、橋、巧、翹 = CHiAU, CHyAU, CHeAU, CHIAw = 1st~4th tone syllables). GR-spelled #puzzles thus allow for tightly-interlocking lines, which makes them much more satisfying for westerners who enjoy #crosswordpuzzles. From an asthetic point of view, because this 15x15 puzzle includes 11 blank rectangles, it is more pleasing to look at than pinyin puzzles, which often have semi-orphan words (linked at one end only).

在英語系國家填字遊戲是男女老少社會各個階層非常喜愛的益智活動，可以刺激大腦也可以增加自己的詞彙量。此次所介紹的遊戲是針對具有進階漢語程度（HSK 2～3+）的外籍學生而編輯，答案都是拼調式羅馬拼音（GR Tonal Spelling, 國音字母第二式），提示有三種版本，繁體、簡體、拼音，歡迎外籍學生和從事對外漢語教學（華語教學）的老師多多採用。

漢語拼音的音節結構過於簡化，顯得很單調（例：『敲、橋、巧、翹 = QiAO），編輯填字遊戲的困難度相當高，本人因此決定使用教育部1928年頒布的拼調式羅馬拼音（GR Tonal Spelling：『敲、橋、巧、翹 = CHiAU, CHyAU, CHeAU, CHIAw）。因為拼調式（國羅）填字遊戲變化多樣化、字串與字串之距離非常接近，所以比較會吸引外籍學生拼拼看。不是對外漢語老師的國人也可以玩玩看啊！
