Coastal Storm Grazes Long Island Tuesday Night

We are having a rather cold afternoon here on Long Island with plenty of sunshine. Some clouds from upstate NY are moving southeastward on the satellite loop and they are generally falling apart as the move toward us. A few might survive to mix in with the sun this afternoon. High clouds from what will eventually be a developing coastal storm remain well to the south are are not an issue today or tonight. Radars are quiet. Temperatures are in the 40s and we have gusty winds which will continue this afternoon before they ease tonight. Lows tonight under clear skies will be in the low 30s with 20s in the cold spots in Suffolk County.

Tuesday look for arriving clouds as low pressure develops off the southeast coast of the US and begins heading northeastward. The track of the low should take it far enough offshore to spare us anything too problematic however it seems now that some rain is likely Tuesday night especially over the Eastern half of Long Island. Rain fall amounts will be reasonable on the order of a quarter to a half inch with slightly higher amounts forecast for the east end. The NAM model is the most aggressive and further west of all the models. This has been characteristic of this model for the last several months and we lean to the more offshore tracks of the others. Bigger impacts are likely in the Southern areas of the Middle Atlantic States and Southeastern New England. Rain will arrive around 10 or 11pm Tuesday and should be all over with shortly after daybreak Wednesday. Gales are likely offshore but winds closer to the coast are going to be lower and a Small Craft Advisory for the coastal waters seems to cover it for now. We could see them upgraded to Gale Warnings along the South Shore coastal waters.

Weather conditions improve Wednesday with developing sunshine and highs reaching 55 to 60. Thursday look for sunshine giving way to arriving clouds later in the day with highs mostly in the 50s with a wind developing from the northeast. Then we set up for low pressure heading toward the lower Great Lakes with a chilly rain arriving for Friday.
