Cold Sunny Sunday Monday Snow South Tuesday
Storm East Wednesday
We are enjoying (if you wish to describe it that way) a cold and sunny Sunday as high pressure from Canada begins to build southward into the northeast and low pressure east of New Foundland continues to churn away. The last days of a rather interesting and remarkable winter are winding down and even though Spring arrives on Tuesday, Winter doesn't seem to want to let go yet. Temperatures should be up around 50 on a daily basis this time of year. Instead some places today will have a hard time breaking 40. Areas in South Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania will reach the upper 40s to near 50 which is a bit more bearable but still below average.
TODAY'S FORECAST HIGHS
On the satellite picture this morning we can see clouds to the southwest along the Mississippi river back into the Southern Plains which is the next storm system getting ready to move eastward. As far as precipitation is concerned we have nothing close by to worry about today and radars should be quiet.
US SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
Tonight looks cold and clear with most lows in the 20s and even some teens in colder areas ni the Hudson Valley. Monday Saint Joseph's Day we will see sunshine for most of the day though some high clouds will arrive at some point later in the day. Highs will be in the low to mid 40s in most places after a very cold morning.
GFS FORECAST TUESDAY MARCH 20TH STORM PASSES SOUTH AND EAST
Now comes the puzzle that is Tuesday and Wednesday. 2 storm systems are in play. The first on Tuesday looks to pass east of the Virginia coast with the northern shield of snow making it to about Route 195 or perhaps south and east of the NJ Turnpike on Tuesday and grazing the south shore of Long Island. I still don't have a good feel for how much snow is going to fall and accumulate here given the snow falls during the day and Im not sure what kind of intensity we are actually dealing with here. Then comes a second low for Wednesday that develops along the Carolinas and makes for a close pass to the coast. Some models are aggressively developing this low but we are dubious right now of the upper air structure here. Too many moving parts make for different outcomes.
NAM MODEL WEDNESDAY MARCH 21, 2018
We will just continue to monitor the situation through today as we see where this goes from here. Frankly I hope nothing happens here because spring arrives on Tuesday and the cold and snow of this month is lingering for way too long. We went from a deep freeze early in winter to a long thaw to a cold and storm March. The longer range pattern remains colder than average through the rest of the month with just the odd warmer day here and there.
