The Price Of Coffee
Like many of you “laptop lifestyle” types, I like to work in cafés and open workspaces around my city. London is particularly great for this. I have a choice of about 10 such places located just 3-5 minutes from my doorstep.
Apart from the fact that someone else gets to make me the coffee, I can usually also focus better in a café than at home. I am very easily distracted so working from home is actually quite hard for me. I react to every noise; fridge compressor noises, washing machine noises, pamphlets and spam mail coming through the letter box, e.t.c.
In winter, if I’m out all day, I can also switch off the heating - so that’s a cost saving aspect.
Talking of cost, however, it isn’t cheap to work in a café. The price of beverages are somewhat more expensive in London than most other cities. If you throw in some munchies, which you inevitably will, then you’re looking at quite a bit of cash. “Eating in” also incures it’s own extra premium on top of the cost. If you do this regularly, it starts to mount up quite a bit.
In the past I hadn’t minded, but cause I was blogging, or editing video to put on the Steem blockchain - which was rewarding me handsomely (because of the high-ish price of Steem). Effectively 1-2 Steem covered my daily intake of coffee when the times were good.
Please note: I wasn’t actually taking out the Steem to pay for the coffee, I was spending Fiat. I was only banking the Steem away mentally.
Since the price crash, yesterday was the first time I made less Steem than the amount I spent on coffee. Today will probably be the same since I’ve just paid £4.55 for an Americano and a little snack. If I continue to work in cafés going forward and the price of Steem doesn’t recover quickly enough - or worse, then I’ll be banking away less Steem than how much Fiat I’m spending on coffee.
This raises the question then of just staying at home and being less efficient with my work. By the way, I don’t only blog/vlog - I have other work that I do every day - which is where I get my Fiat. I’m just being sensible with my budget. I’ve always been frugal (and lucky not to have any expensive habits like smoking).
Of course if Steem does the right thing and moons in the near future, this will all be moot. We’ll all be millionaires and we wouldn’t sweat the small stuff. 😎

Hello, @adetorrent, I am a lover of coffee and work at home. But the same happens to me as to you, there are many distractors around. All the noises of an active house and the puppies looking for attention. I'd like to be able to go to different cafes to work and serve coffee, but I don't have any near home and those that do exist are usually expensive. I loved reading your publication. Greetings.

Yes I'm lucky to have so many places to go. My friend that lives in the countryside with no cafés decorated her kitchen to look like a cafe haha.

Ha ha this is hilarious.Now that I get back from work I even read the post I was polluting. So you need to put extra effort to take more from steem daily to be able to afford you coffee :) I do dream for a day when we all of us will create a world where coffee and food will be free, as birth right or something.

What an interesting mental game that is comparing it to the price of your coffee. I like it. Of course I'm a work at home guy, so I usually just make mine.....but the cost is still relevant. I think I'll go make some now.....
