and lately perhaps I am drinking too much of it...
Even as I'm typing this post I just got invited out to the coffeeshop. The reason for the invite? To plan another coffee meeting.
I work at a restaurant now. There's free coffee when I am on the clock, I just pour myself a cup from the coffee machine next to the kitchen. And then another. And then another again. Why not?
Why Not:
I have to admit it, the caffeine is starting to turn into a "real drug" when I abuse it like this. One or two cups of coffee a day is great, but 5+ is not so good. For one thing I drink all my coffee black and the bitterness of it all can become a little intense. It's one thing to have a morning cup, quite another to need 3 cups in a day just to be awake.
Furthermore now a weird thing is happening where I almost feel... more tired, somehow, after drinking a cup.
Caffeine is great in moderation but it is not good in over-use. It can lead to anxiety and a sense of being mildly strung out all the time. The double whammy is that it reduces sleep quality, thus making one feel more fatigued, which can lead to a weird cycle of caffeine abuse and mild suffering.
Nobody likes that feeling of being a little tired all the time. It makes life weird and uncomfortable.
Back to Basics
It isn't easy to cut back on coffee. There's tiredness and mild headaches and stuff. But I do think I should cut back to one cup a day.
What's your coffee habit right now?
I have free coffee at work too, but its that crap shit out of the cheap machine. I guess you have the nicer stuff?

ONLY THE BEST! I drink from the same coffee supply as the customers. I'm doomed.

Any drug in excess can be bad. I tend to drink instant coffee at work that doesn't give me much of a buzz, but helps get me through the day. I try not to drink too much of it, so I have water too. Working in a restaurant would be too tempting. Hope you can manage the habit.

Hey Matt! That's my kind of drug too! I love to wake up in the morning and fell that smell!! Such perfume of the gods! Coffee is also a good company for writing... And the combination of coffee plus a piece of dark chocolate? oohhhhh yeaaahhhh It's an orgasm on your tongue! I'm trying to keep two per day. Sometimes I change for matcha latte, but in terms of caffeine, matcha is even worse. So, I tried to change for barley, to reduce caffeine (I'm pretty sensible), but it didn't work ... Well, in your case, try to reduce little by little, like one cup less each week for example, and limit on the afternoon for not affecting your sleep. Focus on small pleasures always! Good luck my friend!

Dark Chocolate is always a good idea, especially with other things. I have been eating it with peanut butter or even almond butter... delicious :-D
Tea is a good idea! Green tea is still delicious but only half as much caffeine. That is probably the best answer to the coffee addiction...

All that free coffee certainly sounds tempting.
I'll have two cups in the morning, then drink tea during the day, and try not to drink anything after riding the train home. That way the caffeine tapers off and it reduces midnight bathroom breaks.
Of course I have access to unlimited pipe tobacco and cigars during the day so I may be developing another problem...

Two cups in the morning and then tea... that sounds like the perfect amount. I feel like you've honed this in over years of trial and error.
Maybe I'll try it your way. Or maybe I'll just add a shot of whiskey, load up my pipe, and double down on the unhealthy habits... >_>

Coffee is a wonderful delicious drug. 5 cups a day might be pushing the limit though. That seems like a bit much. I wonder if the tired feeling is from dehydration? I believe that coffee is a mild diuretic. How much water do you drink in a day? Its probably challenging to drink water with that amount of coffee intake. Just my thoughts on the subject. I drink one to two cups a day and agree about it being hard to stop. I get a cracker of a headache if I miss my coffee for a day. I also tend to feel a bit depressed.

Could be dehydration although I'm not sure, I think the diuretic aspect of coffee may be exagerrated I mean it is still a giant cup of water infused with coffee beans, that's a lot of water involved, I personally doubt it dehydrates me. Could use some scientific studies on this subject...
The headache thing is real. You aren't alone there. I think caffeine as well as alcohol can have big impact on moods and things like depression or happiness, even for days afterwards - I'll get some brain "numbness" shall we say, or a light depression, the day after drinking too much, even if I'm not particularly hungover. But that's a whole nother topic...

Yeah I though it was caffeine that's a diuretic but you might be right about the water in the cup offsetting it. Alcohol depression is a whole other thing. I always feel depressed after a night of drinking. Alcohol itself is a depressant though
