Yesterday I saw part of a movie with somebody running with a plastic cup of coffee trying to catch a subway, spilling his coffee on the way. The cup had some kind of tap on it but did not do a good job at keeping the coffee in the cup. Why would someone buy such a cup? Why did he not make his own coffee at home and take a thermo-(cup) with him? Questions like that passed my mind.

I find the idea of grabbing a cup of coffee and start running to get to your work kind of awkward, very American (USA) like. I you like a cup of coffee in the morning you can make one at home and the first thing I do when I get a new job is to make sure a good coffee maker is available. And if you need one on the road, take a thermo with you.

And then of course, I hate all those plastic and carton cups where you start burning your hands that nearly fall apart or make you walk like a 90 year old one (although I have to admit that in wintertime it can be kind of useful having a warm cup in your hand).

Did you ever notice somebody desperately looking for “his” (or “her”) cup or mug? Of course you did, and probably you have done it yourself as well! What was it that made you choose that special mug? Size, color, shape, the size of the handle or did it have a nice picture on it? Or was it a present from somebody special? Or do you use that cup because somebody gave it to you and now you feel obliged to use it although you do not specially care about it? Does it have your name on it or some funny message? Oh boy, so many possibilities!

As a kind of coffee expert I should now start to describe the perfect cup or mug for every possible event and/or beverage. That’s nonsense of course, but when I started to think about it, I realized that there definitely is a lot to say about it, but most of it is strictly personal. I still remember several of my favorite mugs and how devastated I was when they broke or went missing.

And then again, there are of course some exceptions. Coffee cups for cupping events should have certain size and preferably be of glass. Several coffee beverages have their own kind of glasses and cups as well, but they are hardly personal.

When I am on the road, I have my favorite places to sit and enjoy my cup of coffee and one of the things I really care about is that it is served in a good cup but at home and at work I have my “own” favorite cup (and boy, can I get nasty when somebody else takes it! You can find all kinds of mugs to buy (or just enjoy looking at them) but I looked up some sites to share with you.
