It seems that recently there has been a wealth of new research outlining the many health benefits of coffee. Coffee has been shown to reduce the risk of kidney stones, while several other caffeinated beverages, like soda, have been shown to increase the risk of kidney stones. In fact, a study published by the Harvard School of Public Health in 1996 indicates that there is a 10% less risk for caffeinated coffee drinkers to develop kidney stones. What’s more, coffee has antioxidants, an important kind of molecule that boosts the body’s ability to fight cell-damaging diseases like cancer.
According to a 2005 study, Americans get more antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source. Even though fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants, it appears that the human body can absorb more from coffee.
If that isn’t enough to convince you, coffee has even been shown to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, fight liver disease (especially if you drink alcohol) and skin cancer among women, and its mild antidepressant properties have even been linked to lower suicide rates in men. Sure, we’ve always known that coffee helps you feel great, but now we have the hard scientific facts to prove it!
Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t stress that while there’s much to gain from making coffee your go-to morning beverage, moderation is important, so try not to overdo it. That said, the next time you sip on a steaming cup of your favorite blend, you might not initially think of all the good you’re doing for your mind and body by doing so, but rest assured that you are doing just that!
