Bulletproof Coffee: Perfect Breakfast or Fad?

I both love and hate the term 'bio-hacking' - I like it because it's cyber cute, but hate it because it's too cute. J. thinks he's funny when he uses it, like he's some uber cool dude or something (which he's really not). But he's taken it on because he's always been a fan of fasting, and bulletproof coffee is recommended for those limiting their eating. He's been doing a bulletproof for breakfast every day for a week now, making me cringe as I'm making my morning smoothie or porridge with rhubarb.

'Invented' by Dave Asprey, who came across the idea of a fatty, caffeinated morning brew while trekking in Tibet (inspired by coffee with yak butter), and it's spread through the paleo and keto worlds too. It's a keto solution because it's essentially a high fat breakfast, giving you energy during the morning and keeping you feeling full for a long time. Ketones act as the primary fuel source on during states of starvation, when glucose from carbs aren't available. By drinking it, it elevates the ketone levels in the blood and thus gives you energy.

Drinking butter coffee in the morning is meant to make a difference in your appetite if you're fasting, and incorporating some high-quality fats is meant to be good for you, though I was raised in a decade where everyone was trying to cut out all fat. It's meant to boost mood and be anti-inflammatory, improve cognitive function and boost metabolism - however, there's been no comprehensive studies on it as yet. I get the theory on it, but it still makes me uncomfortable - surely you're missing out a whole heap of other nutrients for breakfast? And is all that fat really good for you? This definitely isn't a 'guru' post!

Organic, grass fed butter - this is higher in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin K ordinary butter. It contains fat soluble nutrients like A, E and D (good for bone health and a healthy immune system, and K2 for a healthy cardiovascular system.

Coffee - of course. Make it organic and awesome brewed coffee, a no brainer. We use an aeropress to brew ours.

MCT (Coconut Oil) - MCT or medium-chain triglycerides, is a form of saturated fatty acid that has health benefits ranging from increased cognition function to helping manage weight. MCT is a more concentrated form of coconut oil, but we just use coconut oil as we have it to hand anyway.

Check out the D-tube, which runs through J. making one! You simply warm the cup (as you're going to whizz it up, you want the coffee to stay hot as possible) and make your brew. Then, add it to the blender with a tablespoon or so of butter and the same with coconut oil. Give it a quick wizz and pour the foamy mixture into your cup and - voila! A butter coffee, or 'budder' as we say here in Australia.

I wouldn't try it for ages - are you kidding me? Fat in coffee? But it's pleasantly nice - kinda nutty and buttery and coconutty! I liked it, but then, I'm not really drinking coffee at the moment.

J. really likes the taste, and he says it makes him feel full right up to about midday after he has it at 7 am. I guess he can't just eat toast and vegemite every morning.

Have you tried butter coffee? What do you think about it? Would you give it a go or does it make you feel a little sick?

Ok I'm a coffee addict but never heard about this one. And I think I love my sandwiches with peanutbutter and hagelslag (dutch sweet) way to much to replace them by coffee and butter. But I need to give this a try so I know how tastefull this would be 🤓

Is breakfast the best time to drink/eat it? And is the coffee still hot after pouring all those cold fatties through it?

Yes... heat the cup first. Watch the video. Tell me how it works out for you!!

Now, this is the kind of coffee I would drink. Looks so good and tasty.

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I tried it recently. I actually enjoyed but I love coffee pretty much every way!

True that!!! Although Ive pretty much had to quit it, I did enjoy one on the weekend.. black gold!!

Yeah wicked! It's almost midnight here and you made me want some coffee with butter and all that.... not going to make a cup now but I do want to try it one day. I forgot all about it, my brother has told me about this butter and coffee thing!

Ha, yeah, it's not bad!! You'll be up all night though!! Maybe wait for the morning and let me know how you go!!!

I've never gotten onto the "bulletproof" or butter coffee train, and now I don't drink coffee anymore, so I don't think I'll ever try it. But I've always found the concept fascinating!

I've recently heard of another idea to make a version of "bulletproof" coffee using ginger! You make strong ginger tea, and then use the ginger tea to brew the coffee instead of regular water....also fascinating, but I'm not sure I'll ever try it! haha

Beautiful post, by the way. I'm loving your lettering format and photos <3

Thankyou!!! Xxx I thought of making one with maybe reishi or some other herbal mix @rainbowrachel... what do you think? Ginger tea sounds interesting for sure...

Drinking fat for breakfast changed my life. Unfortutely I'm allergic to coffee, so I use cocoa powder instead. The key ingredient is actually the MCT Oils from Coconut, not so much the butter, because they put you into Ketosis instantly with very little effort by your liver.

Vegans can make this work for them by replacing the butter with normal coconut oil, but you'll still need to add MCTs separately for the instant ketosis effect.

Thanks for this! I really want to make a coffee less version and Im up for experimenting now I'm finding out all this cool stuff about it.

I don't drink coffee, never liked it or the flavor. I drink black tea when I need a pick me up.

When the thick rich cream from our organic dairy became available, I started adding LOTS to the tea. Probably up to 1/4 cup. Often the cream is so thick, I have to squeeze the bottle to get it out, or add a small amount of milk and shake it up. That's what happened here:

Tea with cream crop Aug. 2017.jpg

I'm all about that! I tend to drink yerba mate more than coffee, but I've never been the same since fattening up the morning cup-o! Can't get enough of that fat. Butter is what tipped the scaled for me over to omnivores from veganism. I simply LOVE good fats, and I think the fear of them is the most harmful part of our cultural ideas about diet. Keep it buttery!

When I get folks cringing about butter coffee I wonder what's the difference between putting cream in coffee and butter. hmm, just less water in butter.

Im interested in making a coffee less version of this... getting my experimenting hat on!

Coffee is one of the best sources of polyphenols. Cream or milk bind to and deactivate them, while butter does not.

Good point. Love them polyphenols! To take it one step further, I feel like ghee is even better (better than butter??) as the potentially inflammatory proteins are removed.

Totally! Plus ghee doesn't need to be refrigerated.

I've made it, it's good! My hubby likes it more than I do. I can usually feel the fat on my tongue so I am more likely to go with a yerba mate or something.
Your blogs are fun, I'm seriously enjoying them. Following!

Thank you so much. Your comment means a lot to me and I'm really glad that you have enjoyed my post so far. Looking forward to your post to my dear

I had been drinking coffee with butter in it for years (a european cutomer at our coffee shop showed me) Which to me makes sense milk is good in coffee, half and half better, and cream the best so heck yeah give me butter.

I recently tried the bulletproof at a shop and it is pretty good. I think I still just like butter only tho.

I'm finding it quite amazing to see how popular it yes. I guess I am not a big fan of butter so I have never wanted to try it

No BP coffee for me! Coffee of any kind gives me the jitters.

But I am currently sipping on my keto breakfast smoothie made with coconut cream, MCT oil, cod liver oil, hemp oil, egg yolk, bone broth protein powder, raw cacao, a small amount of whole food vit c powder, some mineral drops and a dash of chocolate stevia. Although it tastes quite pleasant and is nearly 600 calories (roughly 24% protein, 69% fat, 7% carbs), which can see me through about 4 hours, psychologically it sometimes isn't as satisfying as solid food.

Yesterday I experimented with making some breakfast muffins with ground macadamias, bone broth protein powder, vanilla powder, lakanto (monkfruit & erythritol), eggs, MCT oil and 1 raspberry plus 4 tiny sugar free chocolate bits per muffin. They are rather sticky and chewy, with a rather overwhelming taste of bone broth protein. So not what you might call delicious, but edible. Next time, I think I'll add a bit of cacao and replace some of the bone broth protein with hydrolysed gelatin.

I've had some family commitments, and have two trips in the next two weeks, but after that, must get back to posting my keto series. All sorts to report!

Sounds good! I'm not a fan of bone broth (expensive, and I dont have time to make it, plus - can't always cope with meat). I love smoothies but as you say, sometimes you need something more satisfying. Maybe I'll go back to boiled eggs with seeds and an oil dressing and a bulletproof turmeric latte - yeah!! That's tomorrow's brekky sorted!!!

Ooh, that sounds good.

I'm very up on the buttered coffee because of changing to a high fat, low carb diet (Keto diet) and buttered coffee fits right in, for my husband. You see I'm not a coffee drinker, it unsettles my stomach. So I have a rich hot chocolate drink with ground cacao nibs, stevia, ghee (clarified butter), MTC oil and some hot water buzzed in the blender. M-m-m!The thing about MTC oil is it will go straight to your brain to feed it. I just recently made the changes to my diet (notice I didn't say I was going on a diet) and I'm enjoying the simplicity of it and I'm finding it very satisfying. I'm still in the adapting stage but so far so good.

Awesome!!! Nah, I don't diet!! I just make changes to it, like you say. I like the buttered drinks - they're quite nice now I have learnt about them!

Du'h, I hadn't seen it was a video \o. Once I saw the tattoo I knew it was J talking. Sadly I just saw it after taking my breakfast, but I'm curious to try now.

By the way, dudes! You should absolutely make more videos!

Not with faces though - ugh!

HAhahahah, come ooooooon!
