It's the second most popular drug in the world, behind sugar, but it probably never occurred to you that you are imbibing an insecticide every morning. That's what caffeine is. Of course, you're not an insect- as much as your crazy uncle may have called you such. However, there are some secrets to getting the most out of your caffeinated experience.
(1) Don't drink coffee everyday.
Have you ever wondered why you don't get the same effect you once did from drinking coffee? That first few times where you felt limitless, with increased cognitive capacity and vivid wakefulness; now, substituted for a mild anti-drowsiness effect.
Drinking caffeinated beverages daily creates a tolerance and reduces the novel mental boosting effects that it's prized for. You still get the benefit of caffeine switching on wakefulness circuitry in your brain, but the true cognitive boost evaporates. Switching to coffee every other day and substituting Rhodiola Rosea or other anti-fatigue supplements on days off will give you that original mental edge that first hooked you.
(2) Add L-Theanine.
Combining L-theanine, a natural amino acid, with caffeine is one of the most effective and inexpensive cognitive combos available, even to this day. L-theanine acts by negating most of the jitteriness that caffeine typically produces in the caffeine naive while also increasing alpha wave activity in the brain. This combo is the easiest way to feel the relaxed focused flow state that everyone keeps talking about.
(3) Don't caffeinate when you first wake up.
Having a caffeinated drink when you first wake up is the habit and staple of many, but did you know that it's also one of the worst things you can do for yourself to experience its effects? When you first wake up your cortisol levels are high, and partaking of the cup when you first wake up keeps them high and pushes them higher. In case you might not know, cortisol is the primary stress hormone associated with weight gain and negative metabolic chemistry. Of course, it has its place in the body within normal levels but having coffee when you first awaken throws you out of balance.
(4) Add Chocolate.
Adding chocolate, like including L-theanine, negates some of the negative effects of this methylxanthine (CNS stimulant class of drugs). The darker and purer the chocolate the better, and, unless your palate has been addicted to the pure coffee experience, you'll enjoy the drink more as well. Unfortunately, white chocolate isn't gonna do it, and milk chocolate won't do the magic that pure cacao could, but give it all a try. Life is Short.
