Pocket Change Prospector β€’ Cherrypicking guide to circulting U.S. coinage mint error varieties πŸ’°

in coincollecting β€’Β  7 years agoΒ

Here’s an iphone app that i put together in 2010 showing a list of U.S. coins to cherry-pick from.

All were produced within the past 50 years making these coins likely to still be in circulation.

Just look at the dates on the list and try to save them up from your circulated finds. With practice you'll learn which dates are the ones to keep. You'll need magnification for most of these. The images in the app show you what features to look for in order to determine whether or not you have a rare variety.

The links below bring you to the html version of the app (the app itself is no longer available.)
Give it a whirl... THE KEEPERS section contains the main list of coins by year and denomination.

Here's an example of an individual coin profile..

There's info on Determining Value..

There's also good info on the Minting process itself...

Thanks to @gjones15 for getting me interesting in cherry-picking again!

Hey, @orionsbeltbuckle.. I can't seem to locate this app on my iphone... Any ideas??

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Figured it out. (Click on first picture --menu--from there you can actually navigate using the UI of the images/ e.g., back, etc.)

Cool.. yeah the link i posted is functionally identical to the old app. I still have a copy of the app on my old iphone4.

I'll resurrect the app someday but it would need a major overhaul. But there are so many more varieties now and the graphics would need to be real photos.. which introduces issues of copyright so I've held off for now. I did sell a few 100 apps for $2.99 2010-2013

Nice.. Yeah, I figured it would prob cost money--and rightfully so--that's not an easy task, I'm sure, putting all that together. Especially if you designed and drew (which I'm assuming you probably did) all the art and everything too... I'd love to get into some of that myself... It's the "way of the future," that's for sure!! I really appreciate you sharing the html version :) (Speaking of 1982 pennies again--would you believe, I must have come across the refuse of some other coin-roll hunter or something--literally HALF the freaking roll were 1982s!!! But only a few were reds; even had one 1982-d SMALL date--but it was totally wrekt--which is why I say I think it was a roll someone had gone through and just must have not needed or something, because all the other coins in the roll were either 1980s or 1981s, (Phillies and Denvers)... it was strange. BUT got a couple keepers outta there (to add to my others lol) and a couple of em were bronze, too. (Again, showing how "unrare" the bronzes truly are--except of course that small date 82-d copper...)

just a coupla years ago my son was asking banks for IKE Dollar rolls... he paid $20 for one roll... and was surprised to find 20 MORGAN DOLLARS in there! that's when silver was at $30 an ounce... doesn't get much better than that (as far as silver finds).

Holy mother-of-pearl!!!! That's Ca-RAZY!!!! Wow. So you can just go into a bank and ask them for that? Man, that is so cool... What years were they? All the same? 1800s?? Wow. Do you remember what he ended up netting overall? 20 coins in the roll , right? So what are they about $30 on average each? That's so crazy! What did he end up doing with them??

he held on to em.. so didn't cash in when the price was right. As i recall him saying, they were mixed dates.. nothin rare. The take away is that people DO bring better coins to the banks for paper money... completely oblivious to the silver value of old JFK Halve's for example. Also.. there is a lot of old paper money still out there.. Red Seal $2 bills are out there... Blue Seal $1's and 5's... you just gotta ask the bank teller and hope to establish a rapport with one. Try all kinds of banks.. they usually want to get rid of odd stuff.

Hmm... Very interesting.. I've never been as excited about going to a ban before ahah

People SPEND proof coins. Over the course of a year or two, my son put together a near-complete set of IKE dollars ... all proof (actually most were impaired proofs) all from just asking banks for loose IKEs and/or rolls.

That's so cool. Yes, after reading your other post and its suggestion to "befriend" bank-tellers :) It's a thrilling proposition...

It''s kinda funny: I have all these penny rolls I have filled with undesirable pennies. ready to be taken to the bank and exchanged for others--but I actually feel as though I should temper my visits to my local branch because I worry they might "cut me off" or start charging me for the service of exchanging them for others if I come too often

That's awesome, dude... I was curious about that as well: issues of copyright when dealing with US currency/ coins.. I would imagine similar rules apply to any other photographs, as far as ownership goes to taker of picture..

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I'm confused.. I do not see any "link" to "html version.." just images of the app that link to ... images of the app...? How can I access the actual app...?
