Crypto Exchanges by Age

in coinmarketcap •  6 years ago  (edited)

Coin Market Cap recently released a tab tracking cryptocurrency exchanges by volume, number of markets, and the dates they were launched. We used this data, found here, to view the age of different exchanges and the overall distribution in hopes to better understand the maturity of cryptocurrency exchange offerings. At the time of writing, there were a total of 215 exchanges on CMC. Let us see what the approximate years in existence looks like, for each exchange.

The plot above labels all the available exchanges according to the approximate age, rounded off to the lowest whole number. We can see that most of the exchanges are less than a year old and a large number of exchanges started around 4 years ago, some examples of which are Yobit which launched in Aug of 2014, and CoinSquare which launched in May of 2014. Interestingly, the month of May 2014 alone saw 10 of these exchanges launch!

Here we see the five -figure summary of the distribution of all the current exchanges. The oldest exchange tracked by CMC is Paymium which was launched in the month of May in 2010. The youngest exchange tracked by CMC is Kryptono, launched on June, 2018. The median exchange is 2.28 years old, an example of which is Bithumb - launched in the month of June in 2016. Combined with the fact that the average exchange has been around only for 2.7 years, this space has a long way to go!
