Long Island Stuck Cold Storm Offshore Stays Offshore
Usually by now we would have seen one 70 degree day or at least a few days in the 60s. This has been sorely lacking on Long Island since the beginning of March except for the odd day when we have seen 60 and only with it coming under the influence of some kind of storm system. It might be nice to string together a couple of sunny days but we haven't be able to do much of that either. This weekend is going to start cloudy and cold. First off tonight we will see some showers after midnight as a cold front comes through. Showers are on the radar to the west and they will be moving through during the early morning hours until about daybreak or shortly afterward.
US SATELLITE
Saturday looks cloudy and cold with highs just in the low to mid 40s. The front going by stalls offshore and that keeps the clouds in here. Then we have to wait for a coastal low to develop in North Carolina and pass by to our east. Weather models do bring the back edge of snow close but it would seem that only perhaps Eastern Long Island could get grazed by this. Weather models show no sign of a last minute westward shift and the upper air pattern this time around doesn't support such a shift unlike other storms this winter. Assuming everything goes according to plan, the storm passes by and cold air is drawn southward for Sunday and Monday.
RGEM MODEL 8AM SUNDAY APRIL 8 2018
The RGEM model which is usually pretty good in the short range shows the storm Sunday morning at its closest point to Long Island. You can see all the precipitation is offshore. The storms function is to drain cold air from Canada into Long Island which it will do. Skies Sunday should become partly sunny with highs in the middle 40s. Monday morning will be cold as we drop to the upper 20s and lower 30s. Monday looks cold with sunshine early followed by arriving clouds. Highs will just reach the lower 40s if the sun is cut off early. Weak weather systems are in store for Tuesday and Wednesday but at the moment there may not be much cold air left so we will bank on clouds and some showers with highs in the 40s. There is a chance we could warm up back close to average later next week and next weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.
