On a tour of an abandoned tin mine earlier this summer in the hills above Matlock Bath the guide pointed out this yellow deposit covering the rock. It is caused by water that comes down into the mine and leaves this deposit or minerals over the rock, it is constantly growing and getting larger as the water continues to drip down on it.

nice :)

It looks slimey to me, was it? If so there is a big chance that Iron oxidizing bacteria have been involved in the mechanics of this deposit and also constitutes a great proportion of the yellow stuff. You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron-oxidizing_bacteria. The interesting point being that there is a microorganism involved in these kind of iron deposits.

it was wet and slimey to touch and the rock was rich with mineral and metal deposits.

This is pretty cool. Is it really slimy or is it just slippery and wet?

it does have a slimly feel to it, like a coating as the deposits are solid and hard.
