I used to work at a botanical nursery some years ago, where I helped grow, maintain, and collect seed from native wildflowers. The Blazing Star species of plant was one of my favorites, with the purple tuft attached to the actual seed (brown to black in color) which stuck out from the lateral stem. I believe that is what the 1st and 2nd picture shows most.
