ColorChallenge - Friday Blue - Cobalt Blue Sea Glass - Photography

in colorchallenge •  8 years ago

I've decided to continue doing @kalemandra's photography #colorchallenge using one of my favorite subjects for macro photography: Sea glass my wife and I have found on local beaches around where we live.

Also check the @colorchallenge page.

We used to have a wealth of it around here, because there was an old seaside garbage dump nearby... and form many years, they would literally push all the garbage off the local cliffs into the ocean, for the tides and winds to take it away.

Of course, that practice has long since stopped, but we still find quite a few pieces of glass, now polished smooth by sand and surf. So, continuing on from yesterday's entry, here's a macro shot of pieces of cobalt blue sea glass from our local beaches... arranged in a spiral pattern.

Beach combed cobalt blue sea glass

For reference, most of these pieces of glass are only 1/2" to 3/4" long... but on this macro scale, they look larger.

This color glass was generally used for old tincture and milk of magnesium bottles... most likely, this glass has been in the sea for more than 50 years.

Camera: Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR, macro setting 120mm equivalent; shot in natural daylight.

How about YOU? Are you a beach comber? Have you ever found blue beach glass while visiting the sea side? Leave a comment!

So sad that we as a species mess up the planet like this. But glad that these practices have stopped. They do make for really cool pictures though haha. Have fun out there and good luck with future posts!

The mess IS sad. However, sea glass is pretty cool because of the many ways it lends itself to various types of upcycling-- it's used extensively by jewelry makers; some people do mosaics with it, other kinds of art projects.

Wow, that's a very blue blue!

A little filtered sunlight (through gauze curtains) and a pale background really makes it "pop." It's not nearly as impressive looking on a dark background.

That's better than any milk of magnesia bottle! It's nice that glass goes back to the environment in a way that is so much more benign than plastics.

One of the things I really like about glass is its impermanence... it basically starts out as sand, we process it into vessels, the vessels break and gradually the glass goes back to becoming sand.

That's a great point about glass. I like glass, too. If only silica didn't take so much energy to melt, and if glass was as light as plastic reduce the energy cost of shipping. It really is a wonderful substance.

nice post thanks for sharing

Thank you!

This is an all around great picture, the color, lighting, composition - turning trash into something beautiful. Would look good in a small white-washed wood frame. Nice job.

I really do appreciate the way it becomes a form of "upcycling;" people use this sea glass "trash" to make jewelry, mosaics and other types of visual art.

That is to awesome to still find those on the beach they are beautiful enjoyed your post as always enjoy your weekend my friend:)))

Thanks, and happy weekend back to you!

I love the matte finish combined with the lighting. I feel like these would be at home in a video game as a means to restore magic power. Lovely photo, followed!

I've never found blue glass, but I've found a lot of other trash :( Once when I was fishing, I caught an 2 litre orange juice bottle. That was a surprise!

Sea glass is interesting because of the way the "natural rock tumbler" that is the ocean makes it looks like something very different from what it used to be.

Humans are kind of trashy. I take long walks on the beaches around here... and often come home with an entire garbage bag full of debris.

It looks very nice! We rarely find such smooth pieces of glass!

It is not common... not very many things were sold in blue bottles. Other colors for beer and wine, yes... the smoothness often comes as a result of 50+ years as broken glass in the sea.

Good post and interesting to read ....

Thank you!

Lovely!

Thanks-- appreciate it!

interesting to know, blue glass
