Springtime Reflection: Few Things are more Yellow than A Buttercup!

A late entry for @kalemandra's popular "Color Challenge;" a bright yellow buttercup from the edge of our lawn. One of my better macro efforts, catching the tiny dewdrops, as well.

Keep in mind the whole flower is only about 5/8" across!

I find myself photographing a lot of flowers in the spring, and it got me to thinking about the things we associate with different seasons.

Growing up in Denmark, Spring was always about flowers — specifically about the flowers in the woods near our house; a carpet of white wild anemones would spread across the forest floor, almost like snowflakes, before the trees even got their first leaves.

Another thing was sighting the first swallows. It always made me happy to see them dart across the sky, engaging in aerobatics as they pursued insects. In due course, they would be building their "mud houses" under the eaves of our shed.

Spring also meant "planting things." We had a huge vegetable garden, long before "growing things" and "organic" was even a thing. Even as a 7-10 year old, I found working in the garden a very joyous experience. It's one of those things that continue to be a favorite thing, all these years later.

How about YOU? Do you have any particular signs and sights you associate with spring? Do you live in a place with distinct seasons? Do you have good childhood memories of spring? Leave a comment-- share your experiences-- be part of the conversation!

I don’t know what it is about childhoods and remerging the flowers but we had massive rows of them in our backyard. Every year during the spring time we go to this massive outdoor sales area and they sold so many different kinds of flowers it was unbelievable. It was not like today where you just go to the garden section of some store. I’d go with my parents for an entire day of flowering shopping! The truck and the car would be so filled with flower pots and boxes of flowers the only way to fit everyone back in was to have them hold flowers and be careful of where you put your feet.

Now a days they have nothing near that. Not very thick top soil here and then it’s just nasty sand. Most of everything is in flower pots and even those are small in number these days. Just to be wild things eating everything up, bad soil, and insect issues.

I so miss seeing when we lived up north the entire back of the house lined with rose bushes on one side and so many different flowers of different colors and sizes on the other side. They would also grow many a well.

Maybe garden centers these days reflect the fact that people seem to just have less and less free time on their hands. I remember something similar; my parents would put in 100s of little annual plants every spring, and the place would be ablaze with color by summer.

I'm surprised there isn't more gardening activity where you are, given that Florida has so many retirees... with (presumably) free time.

I don’t live in a retirement area. Most here are by definition rednecks and maybe once every decade they paint their house. It’s just nice when there yard is not covered in trash and old broken down things. So the garden centers here are not that great.

Of the couple of retired people that I know that have somewhat decent lawns they have gardeners that do that work. They are far too old even with their free time to want to be in the hot sun all day long. Not to mention it’s really not easy to for them to move around like younger people. Those getting up and down off the ground is something a little too much risk for injury for some of them. Many retired people here don’t seem to have much money to spend. I don’t know if that just because it’s a cheaper areas or if they grew up during times of hardships and are just tight with their money.
