About the photo

"Let's go to the lighthouse," said my wife after chilling on a beach that day. The lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente was about 6 km from our base in Sagres, but we didn't visit it yet. "Oh, ok," said I, not very excited. You know, I am a kind of those boring guys who do not admire too much all the "TripAdvisor's top 10 places to visit nearby", especially under the bright blue sky.

However, driving to the lighthouse, I have noticed the changes in the weather. The sky on the western side was not too blue, and sometimes I saw a strange white thing appearing over the cliffs. I joked: "Hey, look, there are the waves." "Ha, no way!" My kids laughed at me. Yeah, we were 50-70 m higher the sea level.

Then we have arrived at the lighthouse. From that point, I saw clearly: there were the waves.

Breathtaking view! The wind was such strong, so I hardly could stay in place. A storm was coming.

While I was gazing at the waves, the light had changed, the sun hid behind a cloud, and the very strong sunbeams pierced the sky. Absolutely ethereal moment!

About the place

(wikipedia)

Cape St. Vincent is the southwesternmost point in Portugal. It forms the southwestern end of the E9 European Coastal Path, which runs for 5,000 km (3,100 mi) to Narva-Jõesuu in Estonia. Approximately six kilometers from the village of Sagres, the cape is a landmark for a ship traveling to or from the Mediterranean. The cliffs rise nearly vertically from the Atlantic to a height of 75 meters. The cape is a site of exuberant marine life and a high concentration of birds nesting on the cliffs, such as the rare Bonelli's eagle, peregrine falcons, kites, rock thrushes, rock pigeons, storks and herons.

The present lighthouse is 24 metres (79 ft) high and was built over the ruins of a 16th-century Franciscan convent in 1846. This lighthouse, guarding one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, is among the most powerful in Europe (the most powerful being Phare du Creach on the French island of Ushant, off the coast of Brittany); its two 1,000 W lamps can be seen as far as 60 kilometres (37 mi) away.

I was surprized that there was the end of the road. It looks like the end of the world for me.

It is the second end of the road we had been. The first was in the village A on Lofoten Islands in Norway.

Wow looks amazing the first photo, like the Sky is opening

Thank you!

@dmytrokorol the photo of the lighthouse and its orange color made me remember the eye of God so for you a thousand blessings. Successes

amazing photos! very stunning views

Thank you!

The waves crashed against the rocks with a force that could be heard for miles. Thankfully the sound of the waves drowned out the cacophony of noises the soldiers made, as they traversed the cliff side. It was precisely why they chose this direction of travel. They would never see them coming.

More importantly they would never hear them coming.

Breathtaking views. I love the last picture. I love the way it captures the light and darkness. The way the clouds and rocks form a kind of negative and positive V shape. Great eye man, keep up the good work!
