Mt Whitney's bright granite rock, the highest point in the contiguous United States is the peak in the middle just to the right of the 2 needles, contrasted with the intense blue of the sky. This was taken in late March 2012 before the road was technically opened so there was no one at Portal which ruled.
The volume of rock and potential for more new routes is astounding. The area requires hikes for any of the walls so it tends to keep people from swarming them and littering them with new routes. But for those that are willing, the rock is truly incredible and well worth the effort to get to it.
