Color Challenge - Sunday Purple - Flower - (Edit - Penstemon)

in colorchallenge •  7 years ago  (edited)

I'm trying to identify this flower and am rummaging through a bunch of the native plant sites, but still have not found a positive id as of yet. They are growing all over the yard around the house and have been flowering for a couple of weeks now. I'm a bit annoyed at not being able to find the name for it as this should be pretty easy to find since the shape and habit of the flowers is similar to foxglove and bluebells.

EDIT- I think I have finally figured out that it is the Penstemon. I started looking online at the wnps.org, the Washington Native Plant Society, but did not find my answer there. After some more various dead ends I grabbed my Western Garden Book and went to the plant guides for the "Plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds" section. I have watched the hummingbirds going to the flowers regularly , so under the "Hummingbirds - Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs" section there are 26 entries. I started typing them into search until the Beard Tongue got a close match. Long circuitous path to hopefully figure out what it is.
