- Dear Steemit friends :
This is one of my favorite photos, if I have captured that moment so friendly, I think goes according to the theme of today, everything is green, well almost everything because the character of which I will talking is the one who is in the center surrounded by a green frame of nature, if you observe well you will see a nice monkey, a chimpanzee. .which made me ask myself a question
- Do monkeys reflect?
It is a less superficial question than it seems. Understanding the mind of these animals can tell us a lot about what it really means to be a monkey. And from that we can also ask ourselves what it means to be a "human being" and what are the differences between them.
When I ask myself if the monkeys are reflecting, what I mean is if they have what researchers call "inner thoughts."
People have them, we know them, because we ourselves think them. But the existence of these thoughts also arises from studies according to which our brain has a modality of activity "by default".
When the brain is thinking it becomes more active. But some brain areas show greater activity when they are at rest than when they face a specific cognitive task. These areas are in the front and towards the back of the brain and have names such as prefrontal medial, medial parietal and posterior cingulate cortex.
This activity is what would constitute, according to the researchers, the default system and its existence has been confirmed by digital techniques such as positron emission tomography.
- Internal thoughts
Other studies have also shown the presence of this modality by default. During a rest period, blood flow and metabolic activity are greatest in these areas of the brain. Several investigations also managed to connect this modality by default with the so-called "internal thoughts".
These may include bringing to the present certain memories about our life, thinking about concepts, considering the environment in which one finds oneself, our emotional state or simply letting the mind wander aimlessly.
The brain areas involved in this modality are less active when the person is facing a specific task. In other words, internal thoughts are suppressed while other parts of the brain focus on solving a particular problem.
Going back to our original question, do monkeys have something similar to those inner thoughts? Do monkeys and other primates think about themselves? Do they care, remember, or consider an idea that pops up in their minds?
In short, do monkeys reflect? Because if they do, our way of seeing them must change profoundly.
It would mean that we should stop wondering every time a monkey solves a practical problem, because it probably had been thinking about the solution for a while.
It would also mean accepting that these animals may also be concerned about the well-being of their family or may have memories of their childhood.
When we visit a zoo and look at a monkey in the eye, wondering what he is thinking, he might even be asking the same question about us.
This would have profound implications for the status we accorded to these beings and our decision to exploit them, or to protect and respect them.
Let me know your opinion on the subject, in the comment box.
