Saw these to the sides of a trail I was hiking today
I honestly had no idea what they were, to my recollection I have never seen them before. The bright orange color caught my eye as I walking down the trail. I figured they were some kind of fruit but wasn't sure.
When I got back I looked them up because it was bugging me I didn't know what they were. Turns out they are a wild edible found all over Florida. They are called Bitter Gourds (many people also call them Bitter Melons, Balsam Pears & Balsam Apples). They are only edible when green and cooked, thankfully I didn't give it the taste test while on the trail!
I wish I had grabbed some of the seeds to plant around my house, may have to head back out there and pick up a few!
