This guy was buzzing around my office so I snapped a quick macro shot before letting him out of a window. Back to work I guess...

Holy bees! Tell me more about your setup - lighting, lens, where did you take this shot? It's amazing how shallow the depth of field is, at this close range, yet the facets are still visible.

Hi Dek, I used a Nikon D750 and a Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS macro lens. This photo was taken on my windowsill with purely natural light. You're right about the depth of field, it can be frustrating trying to retain focus when the DOF is so shallow.

Thanks for your comments by the way, glad you enjoy the photo. I've followed you and I'll keep an eye out for some of your work

Oh, that's a great camera and explains the excellent image quality. At least cropped sensors like mine have the added advantage of bigger depth of field!

Thanks for following!

You were in danger making such close photo. Great result!-)

Haha, probably should've thought of that at the time : /

nice portrait of a wasp :)

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.

Wow! Great shot! I'm taking him!

Ha, thanks!

Nice photography work, fun to see the colors of mother nature if you're working from behind your pc

This one looks too beautiful, Looks like a giant and cute bee.

Thanks for you comment. He is a wasp though so I'm not sure how that affects his cuteness rating : )

That's crazy beautiful. Looks like an alien.

Thanks, glad you like the picture. And yeah it's amazing how different things seem through a macro lens. I'll be writing a blog soon about the challenges of macro photography, how you almost have to see the world from your miniature subjects perspective in order to grab a meaningful shot. It'll include more examples of my photography, hope you check it out. Thanks for your interest anyway : )

right up my street

Amazing! What lens did you use?

Really? Is that all you need? And a little luck I guess. My extension tubes and my 200mm lens should do the job I quess. Hope I will be as lucky as you.

Yeah you can get some really good results using extension tubes, I assume it's a 200mm 2.8? You should get some really nice pictures with it.

It's a 200mm zoom and I use extension tubes to move closer.

200mm is a great focal length for macro photography. I look forward to seeing the pictures you take.

That's a fabulous opportunistic photo. Such lovely detail and colour !

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to comment and I'm glad you enjoy the picture

That is one fabulous macro shot. And no set-up? He must have been very cooperative. Pretty perfect lighting.

Thanks, and no he just landed on my windowsill. I don't agree with overly staged photos, especially when they're to do with animals. Thanks again for your feedback, I'll follow you and look out for some of your work

Thanks, but I doubt I can produce work like yours.

You may find this other blog I wrote useful (click here).

In short, it's far more about the photographer than the equipment they use. I think you'd surprise yourself with the results you can achieve with just a phone camera. When I look at other peoples work I'm really looking for good technique, more than a super high quality image taken with a fancy camera.

I notice that you're a writer, I look forward to reading some of your work in the future

Sorry to hear he was bugging you. 😂 Upvoted.
