The very first particle accelerator at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland
On a recent trip to Europe, my husband and I stopped in Switzerland for a specific purpose. As a physics buff, my husband had dreamt of visiting CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. CERN in the birthplace of the internet and houses some of the most innovative and intelligent scientists in the world.
CERN houses the largest and one of the most important experiments in the world right now, The Large Hadron Collider. In a nutshell, atomic particles are released into the LHC at high speeds. Scientists observe these particles and wait for them to crash into one another and record their observerations. (The simplest way I can describe it but its so much more than that)
By doing this experiment they can find out more about the physics of our universe! The image below is the very first particle accelerator housed at CERN. Can you imagine all the data and things this extraordinary machine has recorded?
