This first time I ate a bite of Starfruit, I wasn’t the least bit impressed. It tasted a bit tart and lacked that sweetness of most tropical fruits. After doing a bit of research and trying it again, I discovered that the first one simply probably over ripe.
Star Fruit have been grown in Malaysia and Asia for centuries. They are rich in vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Star Fruit are now grown domestically in the southern U.S. in places where the temperature typically doesn't drop below 27 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ripe Star Fruit are two to six inches long with an oval-shaped and smooth waxy feel. When you cut it open, it is star-shaped and is nearly translucent yellow in color. They can be eaten out of your hand and are crisp and juicy. The texture is almost like that of a grape. The seeds can also be eaten
If you get a Star Fruit that is not fully ripe, you can ripen it slowly on a kitchen counter. If it over ripens, it loses flavor and develops brown spots. If you have Kidney issues, Star Fruit could be deadly for you .
.
HOW TO AND WHEN TO EAT A STARFRUIT
• Star fruit has a sweet, slightly tangy flavor similar to a mixture of papaya, orange, and grapefruit or blend of pineapple and lemon. It can be sliced and eaten on its own or added to other dishes and drinks.
• Ripe star fruit is firm and has vibrant yellow skin.
• The more yellow the skin is, the sweeter the fruit will be. A yellow star fruit with a bit of brown along the edges ideal.
• Cut the star fruit in slices with a sharp knife and cut the fruit across the broad side, dividing it into star-shaped slice that are roughly 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch (6.35-mm to 1.27-cm) wide.
• Make sure you wash the fruit well before slicing ,and rinse it well under running water. Make sure you scrub it with your fingers to loosen any dirt hiding in the crevices.
• You do not need to peel or seed the Star Fruit as all parts of it are edible
• Star fruit can be eaten plain without adding it to anything else..
• Combine Star Fruit with bananas, strawberries, kiwi, mango, pineapple, papaya, grapes, and other citrus fruits to make a fruit salad or a delicious fruit smoothie
• Toss your fruit salad with a lemon vinaigrette, orange glaze, honey, or fruit cocktail syrup to add more flavor. Garnish the fruit salad with a bit of shredded coconut to give it that Tropical twist.
• Make a simple salad romaine lettuce, chives, sweet bell pepper, and avocado. Avoid garden salad ingredients like carrots, cucumbers, and shredded cheddar cheese.
• Use a light vinaigrette dressing, like lemon vinaigrette, balsamic vinaigrette, Raspberry vinaigrette, or Italian vinaigrette or a tangy French dressing.
• Use star fruit as a garnish on top of tropical-flavor cakes or ice cream.
• Decorate plates of tropical entrees with slices of star fruit.
• Hang a small slice of Star Fruit it to the side of your cocktail glass.
• Add Star Fruit slices as an accompaniment to poultry or seafood dishes. It goes well with chicken, duck, and many types of fish and seafood
• Add Star Fruit to a cake, cupcakes or sweet breads
• Make Star Fruit jams, jellies, preserves or chutneys
