Song Kran, the traditional New Year holiday in Thailand, is celebrated in April.

Shift the new, and keep the old

While the New Year is now officially celebrated on January 1, the Song Kran celebration in April has continued. However, it has been transformed into a national holiday, and the official celebration period has been extended from 3 days to 5 days.

Water, water, everywhere – and plenty to drink

Song Kran has 2 main features – water and color. And booze. Well, it has 3 main features – water, color, and booze.

Everyone dresses in colorful and flowery clothing. And everyone sprays, splashes, and throws water on everyone else. Traditionally, the pouring of water over another person’s hands was part of a purification ritual. Now, it’s all in “fun.” As for the colors and the booze, there’s one simple reason for them also – “fun.”

The scene in the photo shows the brightly decorated party area set up in front of my neighborhood shopping center. During the day time, the kids could enjoy water and colorful water toys. In the evening, we older kids could enjoy water, colorful light shows, loud music, and booze.
Location – Chiang Mai, on Google Maps

It looks like great fun and very colorful. We celebrated the Asian New Year in Paris at the city hall, and thanks to my India theme I was invited to hang my paintings. There was music and dancing from Cambodia and India.31183571_1002852436547785_91757737146318848_o.jpg31129423_10213195316411918_3295294308754585749_n.jpg
