Psalm 131
1{A Song of degrees of David.} LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
3 Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.
What could be more of a blessing and demonstration of the faith of Christ dwelling in one, than the quiet satisfied peace demonstrated in what must be going on in the mind of a child, quieted and well behaved having been raised at the breast of a loving mother. Trusting and understanding ..
Never so proud or haughty as to forget where one has come from and never so vain as to assume to know more than his maker and provider.
This is also a sign of maturity, yet with no ill will towards our provider.
Peter tells us in 1 Peter 2: 1-3 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
But even this must eventually pass and the Christian must Grow and if he has been truly nourished by the sincere milk of the Word, he will be as the Psalmist who could say "my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me".
2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
3 Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.
Paul said of those who were babes in Christ : 1 Corinthians 3: "I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it". For babes are not able to deal with the meat of life or God's word, they will fuss and cry. The weaned, on the other hand, those who have been exercised by the milk of the word; will now sit at the Father's Table with the same contentment that he learned at his mothers breast.
Hebrews 5
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
The writer makes the difference, As Paul Does in Corinthians, that there are those who are stuck at the breast and never weaned, they never grow but stagnate and are spoiled. It would seem from the language that the Christian has a responsibility to grow and to wean themselves, and this they will do, even as the teacher has a responsibility to wean them and force the issue. The end result being one who can have strong meat ( which) belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
