I've made the attempt to do stand-up when I was way younger.
That didn't work out.
Now, for the most part, I just reference (aka "steal") jokes in certain, appropriate situations.
That said, given that I've been doing a lot of rigging, I'm proud of my joke about how, "My gacflex is as absent as my father figure." joke lands among fellow riggers.
Still, in regard to offensive jokes, I have a dead baby joke that's always in my back pocket. About 85% of the time, people break down laughing. The remaining 15% just find the joke too offensive.
That's the thing about comedy, though -- it's always risky.
Once you're passed the fourth grade, there's no such thing as a safe joke that's actually funny.
We naturally become desensitized as we're exposed to the world.
Good jokes are shocks to the system.
As has been said -- a good joke takes you to a place that you didn't want to go, and makes you happy you went there.
All comedy is risky. That's why the offense archaeology crew, the "punching down" crew, the people who generally make it their lot in life to point out why things aren't funny are a detriment to human joy.
Yeah, sometimes a joke doesn't work. Sometimes I find jokes too offensive to get a good chuckle. That's the nature of comedy.
If we don't let people push those limits to the breaking point without fear of legal or violent reprisal, comedy dies.
