St. Peter shrugged and said “come with me, I’ll show you your quarters.”
He opened a door to a simple little room, with a bed, a table and a chair, and told the priest this would be where he would live for all eternity. The priest thanked God for recognizing his humility and the simplicity of his needs.
Then the politician followed St. Peter up the path to his quarters. He was shocked to find a great mansion, with beautiful architecture and lovely grounds, and servants everywhere.
The politician felt embarrassed at the luxury and asked St. Peter, “the great and humble man of God is in that little room, so surely I don’t deserve this luxurious home for eternity!”
St. Peter answered, “can I be frank with you, senator? Here in Heaven there are many thousands of priests, pastors and humble men and women of God, so we have to be careful how much of that priest section we give to each priest, just so there’s enough.”
“So why give me so much?”
“Frankly, Senator, you’re the first politician we’ve had up here.”
