PAPA-PEPPER : A STAND UP GUY - "EVERYONE CALLS ME 'MEMO'"

in comedy •  7 years ago

I thought I'd try something a little different.

Since some people do find me to be humorous, I thought that I would record a little of @papa-pepper attempting some "stand up comedy." I've never really done anything like this before, and will be releasing a few short videos to see what people think. Please check it out if you can and let me know what you think. I'll probably post another one tomorrow.

EVERYONE CALLS ME 'MEMO'

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Sort of reminds me of the "balloon animals". You are wonderful, but there are somethings you do better than others. Your point is well taken however.

Thanks for that.

If you keep practicing you will get really good at it. It has taken me 200+ youtube recipe videos to not be a deer in headlights when the camera turns on. I still have a long way to go but that's part of what keeps it fun.

#sweetconstructivecriticism i inject comedy into as much content as possible. Keep steeming along. I left a. Message on your YouTube @pappa-pepper Etrain ;)

Thanks!

I like this video

It seems more like a massage ,then comedy . Sorry for being so Blunt . A friend will always tell you what is true.

will see your next try and will let you know what I think

once again it's only my opinion

in every stand up comedy there is always a massage , and its great that you have tried .
In no means it's the end . I probabily would suck at it. looking forward to see you giving it another try
Please try again and we, your steemit fans can see how you progress

Thanks for telling me the truth. I was just trying something new, so I appreciate the honesty.

Massages are great, too. Part of comedy is setup. And massages relaxes people and prepares them for joyfulness, comedy, reflection, and encouragement.

good attempt, there's no problem with your presentation. i would have loved if you were standing in a better place, room looks tidy. waiting for your next one. thank you

IN 43 mint. you got 142$ wow just wow...

Good Work!!!

That's a good effort. But, I honestly didn't find it much impressive as a 'stand up comedy'. You narrated a story a comical way, and not a stand-up comedy. You could have script that with few beautiful punchline. I look forward to seeing more, and see you grow as a stand up comedian as well. And, that's quite a possible thing when you have such a good following. Best wishes @papa-pepper.

AH, so there's a difference between narrating a story in a comical way and stand up comedy? It seems that at least some of the stand up I used to watch was comedians narrating stories in comical ways... I'll have to do some research. Thanks for being honest.

Yes @papa-pepper. The difference is 'punchline'. I think your story was good but you missed the timing of punchline . You should try scripting with strong punches before going real. Cheers!

I actually disagree with that. I think scripting it makes it less organic.

Scripting for the content. It will sound blabbering otherwise.

Tit for tat. Just a Variance of opinion

True. Scripting can lead to static, robotic, depression.
Scripting can disconnect from emotion, connection, true heart.

Yeah, if I wanted that I would watch a news anchor

Not true. To script means to make a content (stronger), write a content- to be able to associate with the audience(s) as you begin a story-telling.

Love the way you took the shot.....great steemian @papa-pepper

Thanks for the encouragement!

125 dollars in 25 minutes of posting, this post may have broken your personal record. Keep up the good content papa! You deserve it!

I was quite impressed myself! Thanks!

Hi, of course u were doing stand-up comedy you also posted proof of it so no doubt about that and coming to comedy part, for that I can say it's intresting and eye-catching video but not comedy I mean that's was not boring at all, I can see you doing that and listening all day long but that doesn't count under comedy, well tried though. I joined steem yesterday and did my intro post today plz have a look there if u got enough time for a newbie here, any suggestions are appreciated! 😊

cool friends

Great try congrats

Well first thing I now want to know is

  1. What is your name?
  2. Who tell you that you do comedy?
  3. Why you had doing this, you don't need to do all that.
  4. Hay only two places of good smile punches , first was at initial when you said hay look here is the chair and I am starting and doing comedy so yaa I am doing stand up comedy.
And 2nd was at last when you put word memo in different situations .
Hay man you have to learn a lot about stand up comedy.
And look you know me I am a honest person, and it's my honest reply to what you had asked here.

Looks like we have a stand up comedian expert in the house

  1. @papa-pepper
  2. No one, I wanted to attempt to try something new.
  3. See previous answer.

"Hay", this is funny 😁

Thanks!

But... who IS Memo?

I didn't know that you're this funny 😂, i enjoyed the video.

Standup, yes, but the humor part escaped me (maybe something wrong with my funny bone?).

I look forward to new, improved episodes of @papa-pepper humor.

Not as a stand up comedy. Papa narrated a story a comical way killing beautiful punchline. :)

"Narrated a story in a comical way", "beautiful punchline": sorry. I don't understand.
I enjoy good, clean fun, but there must be something wrong with my funny bone. I eagerly await the next episode.

He tried a story, that would, otherwise have been funny. But, it lacked punches.

Thanks for the honesty and encouragement!

Not bad, I would not give up growing food to try earning money till you perfect it a bit more ;-) Learning how to dead pan the face is crucial.

What I love most about this is your courage to try something you’ve never done before in front of such a large audience. You really put yourself out there and that’s awesome. I would never be so brave as to try this. Everyone a critic but for your first time trying this, I think you did a solid job Pappa P!

Thanks for that. I'll try anything (reasonable) once... maybe more.

this is good friend of mine. sorry my friends a few days rarely go into posting friends, because the circumstances are less healthy.

Sometimes the weird name comes from an infant that can't quite say things. My sister is Miecie to the family because when I was little I couldn't pronounce "Bernice" and "Miecie" is what came out.

güzel içerik teşekkürler takipteyim takip et beni lütfen

[Turkish] = "Nice content. Thanks. Follow me please."
This guy seems to understand even less than me!

"Call me Blade" is one of my favorite lines. I wrote a story about it, maybe you've seen it? I think you have. A trucker told us that when he gave us a ride. So we called him Blade.

As long as you're doing comedy, wanna try your hand at a pun? (You know about my pun contests, yes?)

I found it funny :)
You explained how egocentric people do act!
... the same thing like - friends call me blah blah... Hmm, really? Good for you :/ We've just met, so we are NOT friends.
Anyhow, I love that way of telling stories, without laughing at your own jokes, letting people decide if you are funny or not.
You have my support to keep up with your stand-up comedy ;)
Good luck!

I could have been funnier to more people if I inserted a laugh track every 9 seconds, but I agree with you. Thanks.

why call you memo???

Its best not to ask questions about a post title until you read the post because it looks very spammy. You don’t think the answer is in the post?

HMMM... I wasn't even hungry, but I appreciated this food for thought!

Omg that was great. Thanks for the laughs @papa-pepper
I can kind of relate Working with old folks. The other day I had a FRANCES to work with. Go in her room, everyone acts like I am in The wrong room looking for this "Frances" character.
Every calls her "TUDY"
I was like oh, hi trudy! No, Not trudy T-U-D-Y
😁

Interesting. I've never heard of a TUDY either.

I know right?
Also you should do something like "Finding Memo" That'd be funny could be some elusive steemian (nemo styled, cough I mean memo) 😁

Incredible @papa-pepper the video make sense.... really nice but I will advise in your next post of this you should put a kind of gently smile "especially with that 'memo" you can apply some funny look to it..like mee!!mooch I didn't know how to explain that with words..

Nice work..
Keep it up.

Comedy is the fruit of life.

I like that line! Goes along with laughter is the best medicine

While this was a very sweet video, it did lack that element of humor we look for in stand-up comedy stuff. Maybe it was because you were just narrating the story and weren't making funny gestures or bringing in variation in your tone or speaking style. Nonetheless, I found it really cute and for me, your humbleness reflects from the way you speak. :)

Thanks for that. I appreciate it.

So glad I came across this, I want to try this myself. I think I'm funny but my lot say CATEGORICALLY that I am not. Well done on your first effort, do some more :-)

😍A very informative post. Great job. Keep it up! 😍
OpenMusic Steemit Kiss.gif

Very very nice post!

Great try, congrats :-)

Nobody calls me Memo, but some people call me Marcel.

We will just make sure not to call you "Vinnie."

Stand- up is so hard and you do it well.

Lolz great almost matching to Charlie Chaplin. Nice expressions.

Great try, @papa-pepper! It fell a little flat for me. Perhaps it's my mood today...I am looking forward to seeing other episodes to see how this stand-up comedy develops.

I appreciate your honesty.

Being dishonest would only hurt both you and me in the long run...

Great video! And by the way everybody calls me Cleopatra :)

Your best joke and delivery was about the chairs being down there. Got a good laugh out of me. Kudos for doing something many don't have the balls to do at all, let alone publicly.

I appreciate that. I figured that I would try anyway.

You are very funny and you are also a great teacher. My only critique of your standup is that you might want to try to take the teacher out of the routine. Another thing you can do is to watch Jerry Banfield's standup routine at Steemfest because its full of tips on what NOT to do!

Interesting, thanks!

Sorry Papa- Pepper, But that was not funny to me. But the Alphabet and number board is pretty cool.

I'm glad that you liked that part anyway.

LOL being a preschool teacher I would notice it. I was just be honest with my opinion. I don't find myself funny either if that helps.

Ok. So I'm about to watch, but your 'proof of standing up' made me snort laugh!

So... good start. 😎

Edit to add: I watched it . You are super entertaining and interesting to watch, but that wasn't stand up.

More like opinion narrative (which is VERY popular on youtube).

If you just want to talk about things that irk you (you know, enough to make you want to make a video), you totally should. A lot of folks use news or just their life to 'speak out into the great uknown'. It's the personality that sells, not so much the content.

Many moons ago (before the husband) I dated an 'aspiring' comic. What others say is true, for it to be standup it needs to really be a series of stories with sweet, unexpected, hilarious punchlines. Normally, when just starting out, you'd get maybe 5 minutes. But when writing out ideas (not verbatim) and going through little anecdotes 5 minutes can be a LONG time.
Most stories won't be too long (surprisingly short actually) and if the punch is weak, it's like a sad deflated balloon that can't even pop.

Lol! But I digress...

You're gonna be awesome at WHATEVER you put your time into. So do what makes ya happiest.

Thanks for all of that. I appreciate it. Just figured I'd try something different, I guess that it wasn't "stand up" though.

good post

Hey, this is weird since I've been enjoying your posts for a year or so now and I'm sure I've seen it before but never even thought of you as anyone but papa-pepper, but what is your real name? Or has that not been disclosed?

Peter pepper posted steemy pepper articles before becoming a papa.

I bet his kids call him Dad.

I don't know the answer to your question.

congrats

Some blokes I served with had nicknames that had got so ingrained if somebody asked for them by their proper name nobody knew who they were wanting, "Anna Conder, real name Bob. Hooks Cunliffe, Owen, Farmer John Hannay, John. ACE = Alistar Claude Edwards, for a few examples. hooks and Ace were sufficiently well know for the cops the use their nicknames.
I have known these guys since 1956 and have to work the brain to remember their proper name even now,

I was a little nervous to watch this one, I dabbled a bit in stand up comedy many years ago and I now stick to my witty humorisms. Stand up is another animal all together, but my experiences with it have helped me give great speeches, talks and introductions - put a mic in my hand and I can give a passable performance - call it stand up and I'll probably be booed off the stage.

Ok - so I did watch it....And I laughed multiple times! This was funny Papa Pepper! You took a solid observation, batted it around a bit, took it to a silly extreme (with the police officer) and brought it home to you personally with your user name.

Your intro was weak (I could feel your feelings!) and slow, tighten that baby up! But once you got into what was funny, you were rolling with it!

Specifically, after the chair (0:22), which was humorous - it was 1:18 before you had another joke - and with that joke I understood where you were taking me - I started having fun with you! Between those two times I have very little idea what you are talking about.

So - get to the point faster! Its probably hard because you want to do an intro like from the garden but my advice - do something like this -

Papa - Pepper here, guys, have you ever met a Memo? I mean, my kids have a grandfater, they call him Grandpa, not bobo or dingo ....etc

And roll from there. I feel like if you tighten your intros way up you'll really like the results.

Sure, thanks. Honestly I had no clue what I was doing and didn't really research it, I just figured that I'd try something different and see what happened.

Keep rolling with this life my friend!

Nice post

Congratulations @papa-pepper!

hi memo aaahh sory papa D: or @papa-pepper . thanks for kindly vid . you looks amazing waiting other one tomorrow

Nice content and pretty interesting. Thanks.

You raised a smile here and anyone who does that is good. Anyone who tries to do that is good, but it's hard to do comedy with someone who has been around for a long, long time. They don't call me Memo!

I don't agree with the payout

The thing about stand up, and what makes it such a great experience, is that laughter is contagious. Especially deep and uncontrollable laughter.

A lot of the comments on here, whilst they may be coming from the right place, they do not take into consideration the unique conditions of your video.

There is a reason that some TV shows add in the sound of people laughing at the funny bits, because without them, far less people would find that moment to be funny.

Had you done this in an environment where those who did find it to be funny were able to heard, this alone would have been enough to reveal the comical side of your words to many others in the room.

Shooting without the audience or any type of laughter is always going to be far more difficult, but I think you did well. Irregardless of how you performed, I would still have the utmost respect for you just for having the balls necessary to try it.

I have considered that stand up comedy may be my calling a number of times, and many others have suggested the same.. But, I have lacked the testicular fortitude necessary to have a go at it just yet.

So, hats off to you, mate. Don't let any of these comments dissuade you from pursuing this further if it is a passion of yours.

throw up some vulger shit bro...

Great job, my friend, you should go to Hollywood and do the comic open mics there, which are a blast. I was there two months ago. Keep it coming!!

You are just so silly and I love it. Thanks for being a part of this community and making us all feel like friends.

Nice try !!!

I do not understand why some people find video funny. It was not funny.

So good.. keep it up. Will be sure to follow.

Please take the time to read through some of the many posts that @papa-pepper has done for Steemit newcomers. I have gained a lot from them that have made my Steemit experience much better, and has helped me avoid many of the pitfalls that can destroy your experience. One of the pitfalls is the "up vote for up vote" or "follow for follow" request. These are not successful, and will damage your reputation.

FULL POWER UPVOTE! Thanks for letting them know!

I figured you're busy enough with all your work, and you took the time to create the "training posts", I could take the time to let them know. Thanks for noticing. Another mark of a true Steemit ambassador.
