Give Up: A De-motivational Speech

You and I are the same. We are not successful people. So I have one piece of advice to give you, and it’s this. “Give up.” Just give up.

Squash Your Dreams

You might have hopes and dreams of being rich, famous and well-liked. Just let those things go. Give them up. You don’t need them.

Famous People Die Too

Most people think of the great artist Michelangelo as a “success”. But they thought wrong. First off, he’s dead. That’s not very successful of him. Currently, everyone knows who Michelangelo is. We know that no one can sculpt young naked boys better than Michelangelo. But in a couple thousand years when the earth can no longer sustain human life, there will be no one around to appreciate his ceiling/wall mural or the sublime buttocks of David. He will be forgotten and you will be forgotten as well. And it’s okay. All the so-called “greats” such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Paul Reubens; they’re all failures. Just like you.

Just Stop Already

This may seem like a negative statement, but it’s not. It’s quite freeing to be a guaranteed failure. Perhaps you want to write a best-selling novel. It’s gonna be garbage. Give up. You want to write a cult-classic indie film. Forget about it. Even if you somehow manage to do those things with your meager supply of talent; that won’t make you successful. For success and popularity are just meaningless, temporary labels.

Am I telling you to stop writing poems, to stop singing songs, or to stop writing in your travel blog that only your mom and creepy stalker read? Sure. Because if you’re doing those things just for wealth and the recognition of others, you might as well stop. However, if you’re painting your shitty, sloppy excuse for artwork because you love creating it, then go for it. Whatever. Will people enjoy and pay money for your crap? Probably not. Will bots upvote the grammatical nightmares you post on Steemit? Perhaps. But it shouldn’t matter to you if your art is loved or not. Some people have really bad taste.

In the end it doesn't even matter. - Linkin Park.

"Meaningless! Meaningless!”says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." - Ecclesiastes 1:2 (From the Bible in case you didn't know.)

Basically, in anything you do in your life, realize that there’s no pressure to succeed because any so called “success” is ultimately fleeting and meaningless. Work towards your goals because you want to, not because you feel obligated to. So just live your life, have fun, be creative for creativity’s sake, travel the world, call your mom because she’s worried sick about you and give up the need to be known as or feel like a success. True success is achieved on the inside. For if you can manage to be happy and at peace in a world as dreadful as ours, then you are a success as a life-form. You may think I just contradicted myself or that I’m just blathering useless drivel, but I don’t give a fuck. Because to quote The Dude, “Yeah, well, ya know, that’s just, like uhh, your opinion man.”

In the end, all you ever have to do, is whatever the hell makes you happy. Unless you like killing people or something- don’t do that. Just do you.
