This week I started to see a new series called Black Lightning, to see its cover I called my attention and more because I had not heard of this superhero before, after looking I knew I had seen it before in animated series, but never gave a glimpse , but in the end it turned out to be a series of DC Comics, very good at its beginning but its end... not so much, here I come to talk about what for me, was Black Lightning.
Jefferson Pierce is a divorced school director with two daughters, he is the savior of Freeland being a director and they are all called "black Jesus" because he is the one who gives hope to this neighborhood full of crime. But before he was Black Lightning, Freeland's vigilante who used his powers to reduce crime in his hometown, but being married and with daughters had to make a decision, his family or his role as a vigilante, decides to start a new life as Director and help children to do good, save Freeland in another way.
Although it would only last 9 years, until some gang members kidnapped his daughter and he decides to put on the suit again, seeing the delinquency of Freeland again, returns to be a vigilante, the savior of Freeland.
Jefferson Pierce: The protagonist of this story, by day director of Garfield, at night is Black Lightning, having previous experience with his powers and combat makes him a good superhero, think calmly, although using lightning does not kill anyone (although that I do not understand if a current of electricity could kill someone, but hey, so as not to make the series so dark) he is a responsible father and a hero to admire.
Anissa Pierce: Jefferson's oldest daughter, a college student who at the same time teaches at Garfield School where her father is a director, a girl who fights for the right thing (and who always reminds me of Lisa Simpson for her attitude of wanting do the right thing) in the series she discovers her powers becoming Thunder, assistant to her father, by keeping her breath she can have super strength and her skin becomes more resistant, an incredible defense with a powerful attack.
Jennifer Pierce: Junior daughter of Jefferson, high school student, somewhat athletic, with teen problems like many characters like her, to the final chapters of the series she shows her powers, with fear of them she wants to get rid of them in order to be a normal girl, has the same powers as her father but much more intensified, an improved version of Black Lightning.
Lynn Stewart: Ex-wife of Jefferson and mother of Anissa and Jennifer, a doctor who to see how her ex-husband was dying little by little with his work as a hero, decided to leave him so she would not see his suffering every night he arrived with wounds, but she still loves the man she knew. She is a character who helps others a lot when they are at critical moments.
Tobias Whale: The main villain, former politician who now works in the lower worlds, murdered Jefferson's father and for which, Jefferson wants his revenge. Tobias is an albino who takes certain serums as medicines that causes him to age slower and make him stronger, he has as a henchman a girl who trained and modified his body to be stronger and dangerous, and his right hand in businessman, although later it would be replaced by Paintkiller.
Khalil Payne: Jennifer's ex-boyfriend, was an athlete recognized by the entire Freeland community, but because of a small accident he remained motionless, Tobias Whale gives him the power to walk only if he gives him all his loyalty, experimental surgeries and dangerous serums, made him a new person, Paintkiller, not only did he walk again, but he also throws paralyzing poison thanks to bracelets that Tobias himself gave them.
Peter Gambi: He was a former agent of the ASA, secret government group, helps Jefferson since he lost his father thanks to Tobias, he trains him and teaches him to use his powers from an early age and not only that, he builds a suit where he can best use his electric power.
William Henderson: Police friend of Jefferson, as a policeman he can do many legal things so Black Lightning always comes to him when he needs help, little by little he goes up positions in the police and so can help Black Lightning more.
Being a character already experienced, with the suit already armed, we save ourselves to see all the follow-up of how he controls the powers, as he learns on the road, something that is already seen too many times, it is true that in the series he learns one that another thing to improve, but not as much as other series do where they have to control even their anger, the character knows when to stay calm, is careful and the series already has its villains and other selected, without the need to look for them in the way or putting that bit of "suspense" trying to make many series.
Some scenes or most chapters are without any sense, present a character, let him have several scenes for him or her alone and there comes a time where they kill him and his death does not mean anything, even some scenes in where William takes pictures of some corrupt policemen and investigates them more thoroughly to the end blackmail them with other things that had nothing to do with the photos he had taken and they plead guilty, I do not say that they are bad scenes, just that they are unnecessary.
I do not know if it's the actors or it's me, but some of them did not make me feel anything, even when Jefferson is upset and was going to do something because of a fit of rage, he did not feel his anger, he felt that everything was going to be fine as always.
I also think that Anissa has a sometimes childish attitude that Jennifer should have and she is much more sensible than her older sister, the actor who plays Jefferson, it was strange to see him sometimes because of his physical condition, sometimes he looked at him and thought "It seems that he has no neck" and although I know that this It has nothing to do with acting but is another thing that distracted me sometimes, Anissa when she put on Thunder's suit had a walk as if she were on a catwalk, with that unnecessary movement of hips on a battlefield and without talk about the emotional talks before the villains attack and it seems that time stops, I know it's a series of fiction but please, they said that the enemy was 1 minute away from them and they have been talking about the importance of a family for 10 minutes.
Black Lightning started in a good way, good characters, good atmosphere, I called a lot of attention to the first chapter I saw in the series, but then it became tedious with family fights, the Anissa character bothered me too many times, Tobias did not I felt like a villain just because he looked bad all the time, when Jefferson got upset or was going to do something because of a fit of anger I never felt dangerous or felt he was going to do something shocking, I do not know if it was the actors or the characters as such that they did not manage to catch me completely.
Jennifer and Paintkiller were my favorite characters, they had good development, I liked the actors, as they acted before the situations, Lynn I can also get to understand the decisions that came to take, they are characters that you can see and understand why they did or do certain things.
William was a filler character for me, he did not do much of relevance other than taking Jefferson out of prison when they believed he was Black Lightning, but the rest, he did not help the character or the series as such, for being in a low position He could not do much in the police is true, but that little he did was almost nothing for me.
Final score:
Black Lightning I give it a 5/10.
Good start, not so good development and terrible final for me, but still a good series to see to know more about superheroes.
