Writer Jeff Lemire and Artist Andrea Sorrentino pair up again in what figures to be one of the hottest comics of 2018. The dynamic duo has worked well together in the past on titles such as DC Comics Green Arrow and Marvel's Old Man Logan. A This time they have returned together with Gideon's Fall from Image Comics. Referred to by Lemire as his "Baby" The two claim to have been secretly working on this project for some time now and was waiting for the right time to release it. So how was it?
Those familiar with Lemire's writing style and Sorrentino's art are in for a wonderful treat as Gideon's Fall does not fail to deliver. This offering serves up the familar mysterious pacing that is complemented by extremly dark and gritty artwork that will remind fans that the duo hasn't lost a step. Sorrentino takes the gloves off with his panel work. The panel breaks in different shapes and sizes had my eyes literally had my eyes doing gymnastics. Stunning artwork to say the least. Can't wait to see what's in the Black Barn!!
As far as the story, the plot approach to Issue #1 was very peculiar as the reader is introduced to a prodigal Catholic Priest, a crazed man in search of trash, and a elderly woman with a claw as a hand! As this is a non spoiler I refrain from anymore chatter about the plot. In reality it doesn't even matter in reagrds to spoilers as Lemire leaves us with no answers and no clues as to what you just read. This may sound terrible to some but to those who a familar with Lemire's style understand that we are in for a intense slow burn tale full of in depth character development with a compelling plot. This read was no different. The best is yet to come. Hurry up and get it now as issue #1 is flying off of shelves. Image Comics announced that the issue was so in so much demand that it was sent back for a 2nd Printing on the same day of it's release!
