H.H. ( new project)
Hinted here and on other social media that I've been about to get going on a new/different project. The idea was for a PG book. Although as I write and it forms, it keeps swerving into pg13.
The title, for now, is just Harrod Howard. What can I tell you about him that wouldn't be a spoiler...hmm....not much.
He's world renowned, respected, an expert of the highest level, and may have recently lost his mind after the passing of his wife and son. It's comedy/adventure. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound like one, but my reputation should speak for itself at this point.
I'm working on six page installments, first to been seen in a Greek Publication- Comic Cultura to see how it goes over. Then I'll look around at publishers...see if there's a good one out there that ain't going interfere too much creatively ( I'd rather not try to do everything myself on this one...like for once, some help would be nice)
I'd recommend following me on patreon for the first looks at stuff I'm not releasing to the general public until I'm further along...
patreon- https://www.patreon.com/douglaspasz
That patreon page is going to have A LOT of how-to stuff involving comics, inking, and drawing in general. Explaining perspective, explaining how to ink with a brush, explaining page composition. Some of it will be advance, but much of it will be very very basic....I remember what it was like to not know ANYTHING, so if you don't know anything, there will be plenty of tips to bring you up to pro level of understanding.
BUT, since you steemians have been so nice to me, I'll show you some roughs. "Roughs" is as much as I have to show anyone, mind you, since this is very early on in the project.
actually, that monster there...I am undecided if he will have wings or not yet. I'd rather he didn't but ...with out them he kinda looks a little to close to a big penis. I dunno, what da ya think...wings or nah?
This (below)is what the planning stage looks like. Scribbles on the basic important elements to the story.
This video explains a bit of just wtf you're looking at and the decision that are being made in the visual aspect of this page.
this panel will be in the middle of page six (middle-ish)
It's a panel where what's being said is the vital part, and there is a bunch of stuff being said. When that's the case, I like to use several word balloons instead of one big one and use them to move the readers eye. This takes more full advantage of the unique timing you can create on a comic book page/about the only way you can speed up or slow down what is being read.
That being said...I wanted a lot of room for that, so I'm using a far off shot. I'm thinking the odd collection of crap in the room will keep the general mood and make it fairly interesting despite the scene just being one guy taking.
Either of the two options on the right are probably pretty good...while also probably too wide haha sigh, since the lone panel on the left there has to be..uhm...on the left on that same row. But I think I can use one of these.
Pro-tip ( pro-ish...more of a "cool hack unless you already thought of it)
- that lower panel...see the little arrows and numbers I highlighted in blue? Those lead to the vanishing point for each side, two pairs for each vanishing point (one arrow on the left'll line up with an arrow on the right...repeat, where they intersect is your vanishing point). This way when I blow it up or light table it, it's easy to find the vanishing point again. This comes in more handy when you are using more than two vanishing points. I find it easier than trying to find them again by lining up object or stuff actually drawn in the panel.
anyways...more later

I say no wings, who ever said large penis was a bad thing anyway? LOL
The video was fun to watch, interesting how many different ways to view / convey a scene you sketch out when you are doing these layouts. Good luck on the patreon / publisher

Thanks...I've got some time to make up my mind on the wings, still not sure. It might come down to how hard they end up being to ink. heh

Hope it all goes well with this. It's interesting how you talk about the 'camera' as it does seem a lot like directing a movie. Angles and cuts make a big difference to the mood. Not that I know much about how to do that.

That's pretty much the job. the guy who writers the script is the...writer, and the illustrator is the director, set designer, costume maker, continuity control...ect ect.

You do have full control, but you get all the work too. As a non-artist I am in awe of what you do.

Thanks for sharing your process! I'm too disorganized and coy about sharing mine....your thought process is concise and fun to listen to. Cheers!
