Learning Dutch... sort of...

I've been sort of stumbling along with my Dutch... I've been a bit slack recently, although, I have been in more than a few situations where it was all Dutch speaking colleagues and so I've just had to keep up the hard way! Most of these situations were normal work (music... ) situations and so it wasn't too difficult. When you are "immersed" in a language, you quickly learn the vocabulary that is appropriate for your particular field! However, there was a funeral situation as well... and let's just say I just shut and up and didn't laugh too much... just in case I was putting my foot where it didn't belong!

Anyway, my kids love books... and whilst on our weekly trip to the local library (where we seem to come home with a backpack full of books each time)... I thought that it would be a good idea to start trying to read books in Dutch. Of course, I don't tend to read much fiction... and non-fiction books might be a touch difficult to start with. Then, I saw that there was a comic book section in the library! ... so, this is my first Dutch comic book, a translation of "Wraithborne"... I'm pretty curious and after finishing this first book in the series, I'm keen to go back to the library to get the next ones! Luckily the kids are also keen to go!

Anyway, I was reading some of the advertisements for other comics... This one looks pretty cool too! Lady Mechanika... learning a new language... this is the best excuse ever for buying comic books... or maybe just using the library...

PS: Whilst reading this comic book... I got locked by an automatic security door into a part of the school that I thought was just nice and quiet... it was, until I tried to get out, and the alarms went off... and I was still locked in. Sigh...

Goeie ding that your kids love books my friend. Miskien sal hulle ook dutch leer.
My own attempt here at a touch of the dutch lingo and reading is a great medium to master a foreign language.
We really struggle to get the kids to read this side, as most of them are only interested in other things, but thankfully there's always a few that really loves reading!
Blessings!

Is that Afrikaans? Interesting if it is, I understand it (same roots...), but it is all mispelled to me!

That is Afrikaans my friend. The Dutch East India company was governing the Cape in the early years and the locals formed their own lingo taken from Dutch, German and a few other nationalities.
Blessings!

Congratulations!

As someone with just a little German and just a little Swedish, Dutch looks so weird to me. Like, I see words that are familiar, and I can even sometimes "voice" it in my head if I want to try that, but it's such an interesting language. Maybe once I get my German and Swedish up to the level they should be at I'll study it and see if I can find more significant similarities.

It is pretty interesting as it shares similar roots with English and the languages you mentioned. I have the same feeling when I see those languages, I see similar things, but I'm likely wrong!
