When it comes to Mighty Mouse I think of two things: "Here I come to save the day" and Andy Kaufman. However, a while back, I came across a Mighty Mouse #4 in a Marvel Comics series. Curious, I had to read the issue. While Mighty Mouse had appeared in other publications, it was in 1990 that Marvel began a 10 issue series that featured Ralph Bakshi's version of the rodent superhero that was initially intended many years before to be a parody of Superman.
The issue that I have was published for January 1991. Michael Gallagher wrote the story and Ernie Colon was the penciler. Others involved were Marie Severin (inker), Brad Joyce (letterer) and Evan Skolnick (colorist). It was titled "Mices on Infinite Earths." The story begins with what is intended to be an error by the editor (Fabian Nicieza), while introducing readers to Mighty Mousette and Mangy Mouse. Both of these characters return to the real story when that begins 8 pages later. The story actually takes off by the rantings of a whining piranha! A female rabbit eventually shows up claiming to be Harebinger. Harebinger brings Mighty Mouse to an alternate plane where our superhero meets and falls in love with Mighty Mousette.
Mighty Mousette leads Mighty Mouse to Minotaur who explains to them about the dangerous activities of the Anti-Minotaur. And who does this Anti-Minotaur have working with him? None other that Mangy Mouse. This entire Anthropomorpic Universe is experiencing parallel universes within its own structure. After a fatal fight ensues, Mighty Mouse is forced to gather an army of like-minded heroes together to stop the destruction of their worlds. It was interesting to see how Marvel worked with a premise that didn't have one human being involved. However, I think some serious drugs may have been needed to really get into the story, because I believe that they must have had some when they worked on it!
