Gerard Way has put some of his amazing genius into this work that will please both Doom Patrol fans or enthusiasts of the weird. However, if I'm to choose one, it would be the first. You'll find this book especially great if you read Grant Morrison's run on this team of heroes.
Many references are put in here; nevertheless, since the story is focused on a new character of Way's invention, newcomers will enjoy it, too. The new character is Casey, an ambulance driver who's actually the daughter of Danny the Street who, in turn, turned into an ambulance after a series of odd events. Yes, weird.
In any case, the story is about this girl trying to find her place in the world after realizing her origins. All this while aiding the Doom Patrol get together and fight the most strange foes -- a typical day in the lives of the Doom Patrol.
Their enemies go from alien fast-food executives, to the Brotherhood of Nada (a bunch of weirdos that have nothing in common led by Mr. Nobody, former leader of the Brotherhood of Dada), to a character that couldn't be created and want everything in existence to be erased.
What's interesting in Way's take on these characters is the tongue-in-cheek attitude he takes on every critique he makes to society. Morrison was funny, too; but the characters felt like they were in serious business. Here they're like so used to the strange that nothing surprises them, which is very funny considering the situation they get into.
In all, I wholeheartedly recommend this title. It's fun, it's wild, it's not as confusing as Morrison's (he's my favorite comic book author, but we all know he's sometimes hard to read), and the pace is so crazy you'll find yourself laughing at every turn of events. Check it out!
