Speculating on Comic Books 11-28-2018

I decided to change up the format a bit; the new format is a bit more realistic to me, personally. I’ll manage to figure out comic books I don’t believe I ever get, but will be slam dunks in terms of resale value. I’ll call that “Picks for Flips.” Clever? Not really. I’ll then move into what I personally want in my “Long Term Collection.” Finally, I’ll mention the “Other Items of Interest,” which I guess is my way of saying I might take a flier on them if they are a) available Wednesday morning and b) I have extra cash in my budget.

First, let’s take a look at some “buzzy” issues floating around. The big Batman news is that the Detective Comics 1000 will feature the Arkham Knight. The video game character is being dragged into the DC comic book world. And as fate would have it, the speculators are suggesting that one should search out 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight #1 There are a few variants that were published with this one (most think the Frank variant below is ideal in terms of possible price increase_; I’m hoping I can find a few back issues at my store this week. Probably one not to over pay for, but if one can get them cheap, it might be a nice gamble. It is Batman after all.

Picks for Flips

These aren’t going to happen for me, but they might for you. If you have the cash, and the prices are right, you should get these. One probably can make some nice short term profits from these very quickly.

Iron Heart Stephanie Hans Variant

This one sold almost instantaneously last Wednesday; one to grab at a decent price and an easy flip. It’s a 1:50 variant; this one is already going for +$100 USD on Ebay. Ridiculous!

Judge Dredd : Final Judgment Jock Variant

I like Judge Dredd, and I like Jock’s art; this one won’t be at my shop Wednesday, but if it were, I’d snag it.

Spider Girls 2 Hyuk Lim Variant

Hyuk Lim’s variants have been doing exceedingly well on Ebay of late. Exceedingly. Pick this one up if possible. I won’t have a chance in hell to find it at my store, but I wish the best of luck to all of you.

Monarchs 1

Another Scout comic book release; Scout seems to be the darling of the Hollywood industry, as most of their series have been optioned. A good one to get at cover price if you can; the topic of the book looks to include good old fashioned anarchy on a utopian planet. I missed out on The Source, found The Ogre, and now hoping to grab this one.

Stars End 1

Antarctic Press is another darling of the indie comic book industry. This one sold out immediately online last week; good luck if you come across it (and pick it up pronto). It features a storyline relating to Ancient Aliens, the Annuaki, and probably some Zecharia Sitchin. Here’s an idea for a comic book; how about a story featuring the ancient alien copper trade here in the Midwest of the United States? Too bad I can’t draw comic books for crap.

What I Want for My Long Term Collection

A new category; these will just be what I like in terms of stories and cover art. Will they have value down the road? Some will, some will not, but I want them regardless.

Action Comics 1005 Ryan Sook A Cover

The reveal of the Red Cloud is in this one; plus the cover art is amazing. I do love fantastic Superman covers.

Batman Beyond 26

This one is supposed to feature the first full appearance of the original Joker in Batman Beyond I really like the Cover A; the original Joker? Sign me up.

Batgirl 29 Middleton Variant

Still adding to my daughter’s Middleton Batgirl collection, and I think we’ve got one more on the way in this series before Artgerm does one. Raw prices sold over the past 4 issues include:

  • #25 – Mean price $7.50 USD
  • #26 – Mean price $8 USD
  • #27 – Mean price $5.50 USD
  • #28 – Mean price $8.50 USD

Also, don’t forget Middleton is moving over to Martian Manhunter soon…

Detective Comics 993 Brooks Variant

This one should be an easy one to get. Right? It is Batman after all. The story meandered a bit last issue, but hoping they get it back on track. I feel like there is whip saw happening with the two big Batman books; if Batman gets slow or boring, Detective picks up. If Batman gets intense (as it has of late), Detective gets sloppy. The burden of consistently writing for the Batman, I guess.

Spider Girls #2 Putri A Cover

Titans 30 Putri Variant

I love Putri’s work too; I’m just going to buy her stuff going forward online and not worry about missing out on them at my LCS. I hope my daughter will love them some day. And do you remember that elderly gentleman with the walker I have to deal with every Wednesday morning? He likes her work too; no more messing about.

Wonder Woman 59 Frison Variant

I don’t think this one is quite as cool as her others, but still, let’s complete the set! I do love her work, and I still working on backfilling her previous issues. The past three issues, over the past 2 weeks, have gone as such:

#58 – Mean price $13 USD
#57 – Mean price $11.50 USD
#56 – Mean price $10.50 USD

Not bad.

Daredevil 612 Both Covers

I love both of these, and there should be a good closure to the current Daredevil. I am also truly enjoying this Daredevil series. I’m glad I found it just to have Daredevil possibly being killed off so they can do another reboot.

The Flash 59 Kerschl Variant

I really like Kerschl’s The Flash covers thus far; I don’t think the market agrees with me, but I don’t care. I’m going to get his set of The Flash, and maybe even get them pressed.

Other Items of Interest

Marvel Action Spider Man #1 by IDW

This is interesting; a non-Marvel Spider-Man title? I’m going to give a go. I have to admit, I am burned out on Spider-geddon (and so is my wallet). Maybe this one will restore some life into my favorite Marvel character.

Edgar Allan Poe's Snifter of Terror # 2

I missed out on the first one, but managed to get the 2nd online. If I like this, I’ll probably have to pony up to get #1 at some point. It looks like the story involves around a drunk Edgar Allan Poe, so yeah, I’ll probably like it. Goodbye money...

Black Panther 6

Is that a symbiote on the cover, or is that just me? Speaking of symbiotes…

I'm getting ready to purchase for 12-5-2018 is the 1:10 Venom 9 variant. It’s a Spider-man noir animated issue. I think it looks pretty cool, so I’ll try to get that this Wednesday online. This will be the first time I’ve dabbled with this type of variant; from what I can tell, the real money can be made guessing on these. Although I’ll just keep this one long term if I can get it.

As always, leave a comment if you think I missed something or am guessing wrong. Thanks as always for reading.

keep em coming. Love that you are doing this brother!

hey thanks so much! It helps to keep the head straight come Wednesdays!

Absolutely. I wish we had more comic folk here to enjoy these useful tools. This time next year I hope we are singing a different tune.

no kidding; it's fun just getting to meet this small bit of a group right now. Plus if we work together on our posts, we can generate some more bitcoins/steem to help out with the weekly budget! As in this week is going to be another wallet drain ie it'd be nice to have some Steem/Bitcoin to help subsidize.

That would be a lovely thought. I wish it were more active but I’m hopeful that will happen in time.

I like what you did, you have a new follower

thank you - it really is just some speculation, but I'm slowly getting back into it. I was on a bit of a hiatus in respect to comics, but now they are literally everywhere in my house. thanks again! I should have one out tonight.

Glad to see that your still on the platform and posting. I have been away from the site for about a month. Steem price has dropped and with bitcoin dropping there is not way to make a return on investment on the site. I'm going to get back to simple organic growth on the site. I will post and make some pennies but I cant put too much time into this. I have to do things that really can make some decent income.

haha, i hear you. This crypto market blitz was awful; I finally bit the bullet and cashed out my initial investment...Costa Rica ain't happening anytime soon. The ego took a blow too ! I hear you on making income. I'll keep chugging along here in hope that Steem does turn around at some point in the future; plus, I enjoy posting these things. Talk soon

I will start posting again tonight

did you ever get caught up on the Immortal Hulk? Holy hell, it's good stuff. I'm trying to get issues 1-3 online, but have everything else in my collection.
