There are a couple of things I really enjoyed with the new Batgirl issue #27. One, I was fortunate enough to get the Joshua Middleton variant cover. I love this cover. The "new" Batgirl costume outlined against the full moon, with Babs swinging through the night sky.
It's a beautiful piece of art, and I really need to get his other Batgirl variant issue covers to save for my daughter when she gets older. Not only will she probably get my 21 Litecoins, but some very cool comic books as time moves on.
A second part of this book I enjoyed was Batgirl’ls return to Gotham City. After her accident with the thing known as Grotesque, her implant was shorted; she later had a seizure in front of her father and a new Gotham City detective at the GCPD. For her to return to her father when confronted with this new crisis is heart-warming . Maybe it’s the new father in me speaking, but the idea of a daughter looking to her father for help and safety, later in life, is truly endearing to me.
Three, I loved the desire of Babs to return to the streets in her “new” costume. She may have set up the case to be resolved by the Batman while taking shorthand notes in the hospital, but she wanted to bring the case to closure. Despite having issues walking and moving, she returned to the dark night to bring justice to the murderous Grotesque.
And the final item I really appreciated with this issue is the unity of the Bat-family coming together. The relationship between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon has been entertaining to see unfold. The chemistry between the characters is growing very quickly, and I have to say I enjoy reading this type of storyline in today’s day and age of comics. The two are proteges of the most violent and brilliant vigilante to ever have graced the comic book world; the two are finding one another’s friendship and budding romantic feelings beneath the very large and insane shadow of the Bat.
All in all, it’s an interesting time for the Bat-family. Bruce Wayne lost Selina Kyle; Dick Grayson was recently shot in the head after returning from a mission on the Island of Harm at the request of the Dark Web and WYRM. And Barbara Gordon is struggling with the implant that allowed her to recover from paralysis. The Dark Web and WYRM is the new enemy that appears to be at the forefront of this new attack on the Bat’s family.
We know that there will be hell to pay in Batman as the Dark Knight hunts down Nightwing’s attempted assassin. Things are going to get very dark, I think. As for Batgirl and her brush up with the Dark Web, we’ll see who goes unhinged should her diagnosis become worse. As the comic closes, there is a scene where Babs becomes disoriented once again from the implant issue; she escapes the a high rise building and falls into dumpster, hoping that the garbage breaks her fall and that Dick Grayson doesn’t find her in her existing condition. I think that this is a foreshadow of where these books are going. And I love the direction these stories are going.
With all that is going on with Batgirl, Nightwing, and of course the patriarch Batman, these books are going to get into some very dark and disturbing places. Yet there is a light at the end of tunnel, I believe; the Bat family has hit an all time low, but salvation and resurrection exist in the near future. No matter how demented the shadow of the world is, family, love, and friendship exists to shove that demented thing back into the abyss.
Anyway, if anyone else is keeping up with these books, I’d love to hear from you. With all the controversy in the industry today, I still think these books are important. They are stories; stories are as old as humanity, and define us as a wonderful and loving species, not matter how dark the night is.
Damn that Middleton cover is gorgeous. Loving not only the costume design, but the art itself, the colors used, really beautiful. I have an old Batman coloring book and those greys and blues are hitting a sweet "classic" spot for me that the coloring book cover had.

I am really enjoying his work on the Batgirls...I just wish I was paying better attention earlier on this year. I think I could have gotten a few at retail and not have to pay the premium. I'd love to get them all for my daughter's collection. Thanks for the comment -

Do it! Nothing has been more fun or memorable in all my comic memories than grabbing a run of Spider-Woman one year with my daughter, once a month, keeping up with it.
Your post is my first awareness of the "Dark Web" character, which I automatically dislike the name, but that is only because I now just want a huge Gotham / Bat family of books crossover event that involves the dark web, just hire some Mr Robot writers to help out.

haha I like that idea. Not sure where the writer's are going to take it, but hoping it's an epic Batfamily story. She's a bit young now for comics, but I think she'll appreciate down the road. It probably wouldn't be a bad investment, either, for her.
