While the original Green Lanterns of sector 2814 are busy in rebuilding the corps and reclaiming the universe from the villainous Sinestro Corps, who will shine the Emerald Light on planet Earth?
In this post we’ll tackle DC Rebirth: Green Lanterns Issue 1. This is not a reboot nor a rehash of the Green Lantern mythos. Instead this is DC Comics shaping new stories as they bring back the elements that every DC fan loved during the pre-New 52 era.
As a Green Lantern collector, this post will be the first of many comic reviews that I have planned to create. So be sure to follow @thepeculiargeek if you want to be updated with the current DC timeline, especially when it comes to Batman and Green Lantern stories.
So enough of the talk, let’s jump into the review.
[I SUPPORT THE COMIC INDUSTRY, I ONLY READ WHAT I ACTUALLY BOUGHT. NO SHADE ON THE PEOPLE WHO READ FREE SCANS ONLINE, BUT IF WE REALLY LOVE THE INDUSTRY AND WE WANT TO SUPPORT THEM, BUY COMICS! :D]
NOTE: I’ll be giving out details, yet try my best to avoid spoilers.
The pilot issue established the tone of the whole run. THIS WILL BE A BUDDY-COP SERIES. If you’re fond of watching unexpected duos like Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker from Rush Hour or 21 Jump Street’s Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, well expect the same vibe on this Green Lantern series.
The story started as Hal Jordan calls for the rookie lanterns of Earth. He then tasked them to work together as earth’s newest lanterns. Of course the two didn't take the news well and started arguing. Fortunately for Hal, he thought of a trick to keep these two lanterns together (WON'T SPOIL IT FOR YOU GUYS HAHAHA GET THE COMIC AND BE AMAZED)
We are then introduced to two new Lanterns. First, Simon Baz. He is someone who is no longer new for people who are actually following the New 52 run, since he was first introduced during that era. He is an interesting character who do not fully recognize the power of the Green Lantern ring. This is evident due to his decision to keep a handgun on his side, despite wielding the universe’s most powerful weapon.
Second is Jessica Cruz. The first female Lantern from Earth. A Hispanic-Latina, who is very unsure of herself. She suffers anxiety issues, which gives a strong point for character development. This is because how can a Corps, founded in the principle of overcoming fear and becoming fearless, chose a person who is constantly shackled in fear.
Of course, the two didn’t get along at this issue as they both exhibit their differences. This gives us reader something to look forward to; a story that will revolve as to how they will solve their personal issues and how can they use these discoveries in order to work well with each other.
Also in this combination, we see how DC is integrating diversities in their stories by placing people in minority groups. Personally I applaud this take on diversity, it is created well in such a way that will not destroy well-loved concepts of well-established characters.
The issue also provided two sneak peeks as to what these rookie Lanterns will be up against. This is by introducing us to an unknown Guardian who possess a new power ring and through the threat of Red Lantern’s plan to invade Earth.
The writing on this one is fair, it won't make you wow just yet. But for an introduction, it is enough to make you crave for more.
The art on the other hand is great and definitely worth your bucks! I personally wish to tear some of the pages apart and turn it into a poster on my wall. Unfortunately, I was only able to get one copy of this issue. So doing that is impossible. HAHA
Overall I really do enjoy this introduction. It was short yet sweet. It makes you want to crave as to how these characters and stories flesh out. Definitely this is a must buy for any Green Lantern collector. No question it is a 9/10 comic book to have in your collection.
Again this is just the first of many comic reviews, so be sure to follow @thepeculiargeek for more comic goodies!
