Race relations have gotten worse in recent years and certain white people are trying to improve things by displaying their self-hatred on Twitter. I mean, nothing says "I'm not a racist" like "All people of my race are racists", right? The show itself revolves around an eclectic group of Ivy League college students and how they deal with racial and other forms of discrimination. However, Vann Newkirk wasn't sure if the moralizing elements were sincere or humorous in nature. From the trailer, it looks like a semi-funny woke fest. Other than that, I don't really have any other comment on the show.
What I will comment on is the general concept of white guilt as it has reared its ugly head once again. White guilt is when a white person feels that they have done wrong to people of other races by simply existing. White guilt is mostly found in Americans because of how American slavery is commonly taught. Slavery of this nature is not talked about in other contexts, such as having (cheaper) Irish slaves or today's child camel jockeys in the UAE.
White guilt appears to be a form of self-punishment...for simply existing. It gives the sufferer a sense of purpose and self-improvement and thus, they suffer believing it will make them better. For some, it is the simple sense of having done something wrong that motivates them to punish themselves. For others, it is a means of asserting their moral superiority in the (real or perceived) absence of other redeeming traits.
Since white guilt is a largely internal issue that revolves around self-esteem, my advice to someone with white guilt is to look back on that they have done as an individual to better the lives of others and to continue on that path in a healthy manner. Hating yourself for your skin color is unproductive and actually reinforces backward thinking as it forces one to see race in every situation, even when it does not apply.
