The Old Dog Advises: Be Very Calculating And Watch Your Comments Add Up!

in commenting •  7 years ago

The Final Tally is in And Commenters Are BIG Winners!

In one of my latest posts: The Old Dog Asks: Can YOU Succeed On Steemit Simply By Commenting? Meet @eric-boucher  I wrote about how Steemers can get a good start toward being successful here on Steemit by COMMENTING.

Thanks to some great support, not only was the post quite successful but so were the commenters!

I added up the value earned on all of the comments and the results were very encouraging!

Here is The Raw Data!

  • Post Payout: $350.27
  • Total Payout on all Comments: $163.71 (not too bad!!)
  • Total value between the post upvotes and comment upvotes: $513.98
  • Commenting payouts to @eric-boucher $41.73 (one of Steemit's commenting experts struck again)
  • Commenting payout to @kus-knee $27.77 (add this to my post pay out and I can't complain!)

Is Upvoting Your Own Comment Ethical? Is it Frowned Upon?

This was asked by several Steemers based on what they read in my article. Here is what I wrote about it in the post:

Some good questions were then raised. Notice my response to one of them:

This little interchange was a nice sharing of ideas but it also netted @cryptokash $1.64 (not too shabby!)

What Do You Think?

  • Have you realized that commenting is a great way to earn on Steemit?
  • Are you beginning to get noticed by your comments?
  • Are you surprised to see the high total paid out for comments on some posts?

I hope that you enjoyed this post on being very calculating and then watching your comments add up!

Until next time,

Wow... Your kindness and teamwork keeps on rising us all to the moon! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and, as a crypto musketeer to another, all for one and one for all!

I also see the trend where people are starting to write more creative, positive and useful comments while seeing the voting on these same comments rise in value. This is a great sign showing the health of our platform gaining in sustainability.

Namaste :)

Newer steemians especially are constantly trying to find new tricks to "drive more traffic" to their posts. I also keep telling them more or less the same thing (this one from a comment regarding randowhale votes):

"One of the best ways to drive traffic is probably by engaging the community, adding thoughtful comments and good quality posts."

They could also learn a thing or two from @eric-boucher, and from @kus-knee as well! :)

I love the quote you just shared with us and really appreciate your kind words regarding our work together here.

All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

Good points made!

hmmm... i was supposed to really unplug but i remember you
suddenly having skimmed this made me change my mind
perhaps i should log in daily
even for an hour - lol :)

Thank you both for your kind words. Sometimes the best "tricks" are just staring us right in the face, if we choose to put in the "time and effort" to realize them! :)

BTW, welcome back from your trip @kus-knee, looking forward to some kewl travel stories too!

Nice post, you always write captivating articles!

Hey thanks!

I've found that timely, insightful, supportive comments tend to do much better than mine.

Hey, you've got 4 upvotes so far on this one. Way to go!

Clever!

I have yet to make the big comment pay-outs like some of your examples, but I am learning how to do better.

I would like to add my two cents to the upsteeming your own comment, and how important that can be.

On an unrelated post, I asked a question to the OP. My comment came in 8 minutes after the post. I did not upvote it. A different user commented the same question about 3 minutes after I did. He upsteemed his own comment.

The original poster saw his comment, acknowledged it, upsteemed it, and the two of them interacted for awhile. It netted the comment around $4. My comment sat in the background and did not generate any $. Lesson learned :)

Been there!

You gave a very good example. Thanks for sharing that!

@kus-knee, first off-- hope you had a relaxing and fun time on your "technology break!"

As for comments, I think you know how I feel about comments-- for me, they are the very essence of Steemit; the way we have "dialogue" about things, and with each other. It's how we connect; it's how we end up with the sense that there is a community here, not just another social media venue where people "collect likes" but otherwise know nothing about the people who interact with their content.

The question of "Do you upvote your own comments?" is always an interesting moral dilemma for me, and I have to frame my answer in terms of "value." I generally reserve upvoting myself for particularly interactive comments on very "busy" posts. And the reason I do it there is mostly to "bump up" my own comment in the comments area... since comments tend to be ranked (I think it'e the default sort) by their current rewards. So it offers visibility. Otherwise... I tend not to, mostly because I'd rather use my voting power to benefit someone else... it's a "pay it forward" thing, I guess.

Thanks for your detailed and honest input. I know some Steemit investors also upvote their own comments to increase their ROI.

I'm new here so these are great tips. Thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to participating in this community!

Welcome to steemit, you'll love it here. I went and looked at your posts. Good start! I upvoted and then sent 2 SBD to @randowhale and got one of them up a bit more for you. I've written you a few suggestions on one of the posts.

Thanks so much! Appreciate your help and guidance.

First of all: Welcome back! I hope you had a nice time without steemit.
Second: Your article about commenting was very interesting for me and surely for all others who participated by reading or commenting.
Third: Your rule about voting your own comment is considerable. I will do so if I had some effort to write it and somebody else voted it.
Forth: Commenting with good content and related to the main pst is the best way to get attention.
Buona giornata, cane vecchio.

Four good points made by you and so the Cane Vecchio is forced to upvote this comment at 100%

@onceuponatime upvotes his own comments, his full power vote is worth around 10$.

That's an excellent strategy to earn lol

I agree, especially if you've invested in Steem which I believe he has. It's worthy of noting that @onceupontime upvotes MANY other members comments as well. @trafalgar did that a lot in the beginning but much less now that he is one of Steemit's most successful (highly deserved in my opinion) authors.

Oh yes! He up votes other comments as well and he's very generous, just checkout his recent giveaway ❤

This post received a 2.3% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @libert! For more information, click here!

lol feels a bit weird commenting on a post about commenting. I believe that anyone can click on a post to upvote it but commenting is where the real connections are made and it is where the "goodstuff" is.

Now I'm commenting on a comment about a post on commenting! :)

thank you so much for this post! i've seen a bunch of people who simply plug their posts on their comments after a no-effort "thanks for sharing". it is very discouraging for authors who receive mostly these kind of comments.

think about the author when you are commenting. they put in effort to make their content, so at least read through it and put some thought into your comments!

Some of the comments are so good that they are worthy of a post on their own!

I actually really enjoy commenting. I get pulled into interesting posts and want to comment as a way to let the author know that I appreciate what they wrote or created. I just do it because it feels like the right thing to do. It's fun.

Your motive is pure and your actions are correct. You will succeed!

Commenting is a great way to connect to authors. If i take my example, it feel very good when someone comments after reading my post, and i think that's how every author be it new or experienced here, all have curiosity to know what there readers think of their post. But we should not be comment in greedy way, but should comment straight from heart and it help to connect with author.
Pro like kus-knee has shared his valuable experiance with us.
Thanks @kus-knee

"should comment straight from heart and it help to connect with author."

Excellent!

:)

Congrats on your earnings buddy and I hope this inspires people to keep posting on steem and not give it up! :)

We will never surrender. Have fun, engage, read write, comment, learn and then earn!

You Are SPOT On!

Commenting is indeed a good way to earn interesting rewards! I've seen when I really add value to a post by a good comment, I can get comment rewards upto a couple of dollars; Sometimes given by a powerful user, sometimes given by multiple users. Last week I even got a couple of dollars send to my wallet because someone nominated one of my comments to some challenge rewarding the best comment! And this comment I made apparently won the challenge! How cool was that!

Have you realized that commenting is a great way to earn on Steemit?

Absolutely!

Are you beginning to get noticed by your comments?

For Sure. Commenting results for sure in more followers. I think most of my followers I get from commenting. This can be easily observed with the Steemdb web tool. Generally I see followers coming in after a period of heavy commenting.

Are you surprised to see the high total paid out for comments on some posts?

Sometimes I am :) I was even more positively surprised on winning some challenge I didn't even know of. Commenting is for sure rewarding. And not only in dollars, but to me commenting is the start of interacting and I had numerous interesting conversation on Steemit on a whole wide range of topics. Sometimes I help others, sometimes others open my eyes wider on some topic.

Wow what a great testimonial, especially the reward. Why note post an article about your experience?

Oh wow, I didn't think of that. Thanks for the tip. Maybe I should do indeed :)

I think I finally broke $1.00 on a comment! LOL

Let's do it again right now so you feel GOOD!

Gee... Thanks Dad!

Check it again now!

I know... This is insane!!! I'm lovin this... we're all going to be rich- rich I tell ya!!! I was going to do a couple of more posts today but I don't want to drain the reward pool lol!

My comment is intended to inform you that I agree commenting is good :)

Good point!

I frequently comment on posts that i find interesting and most time the ratio between my blog posts and comments is quite miles apart! For 1 post i comment almost 10 times and because i do it because the content interests me i don't feel the same strain as i feel researching for the next blog post idea.

Currently my highest earnings on a comment is somewhere between $5 -$8 hope to get to $40 category soon.

Hey wow, I'll take $5-8 eight days a week!

True, I am kinda a newbie here, commenting had been raised out and suggested by several experienced blogger here and I find it is a good way too. Other than paid out, commentinf shows you read someone's post (Involve), when you comment you(Engage).
Commenting also encourage discussion, it may makes the original blog to a next level, coz you may inspire the author or other readers.

Yes commenting engages, builds relationships and makes this a great place to be!

You're not kidding about the comments. As someone who's never made a post worth more than $10, comments are where my bread and butter is. Commenting also has the nice effect of attracting followers, so it's win-win.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Glad to read that it^s working for you!

Some days commenting can make me more than my posts, but it varies a lot. You could just comment on posts by big players who can give you a nice reward, but you will miss out on a lot of cool conversations. I think my comments gained me a lot of cool followers who engage with my posts. I aim for a balance of profit and fun

This say a lot about your attitude:

"I think my comments gained me a lot of cool followers who engage with my posts. I aim for a balance of profit and fun"

It's a big reason for your success!

Cheers. I could have gone all out for profit, but I've been too busy having fun. I didn't make anything in the early days anyway

I do notice a nice payout on comments sometimes. It's a nice bonus to my post payouts, especially on those bad days when I feel completely ignored or am sad about a post I'm rather proud of getting no attention.

I do notice some posts get huge payouts on comments. I think this is mostly on the Steemit or crypto related posts and the ones in trending. I'd join in on a conversation there, but to be honest, most trending posts are all the same and not really my cup of tea :-)

I hope I get noticed by my comments though! Some are really not that insightful (I can't always say more than "That's a beautiful picture"), but I do try to add value with some comments. I just wrote a pretty extensive one to someone who was bothered by the sort of posts that earned highest (I get where she's coming from).

You are doing great! You're a good consistent Steemer!

Aww thank you, I'm happy to hear that from you!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

After reading your first post I started to put more of my time I want to use for steemit into commenting and if I have not used my steempower yet, upvoting them.

Since my ability to write and my willingess to edit is very limited, I will stick with if for a while. Since I feel from comments there isnt this high of an expectation. Depending on the topic, I catch myself still putting a lot of thought into it and I made more money with commenting, than with any of my posts. Also I think I got more follower through commenting then through posting.
Also I enjoy it a lot to get into other peoples head what they think about certain topics, which is kind of hard if many of the comments you get is " I follow you, please follow me back".

To sum it up I earn more through commenting and I have more fun

I was going to comment along the same line of thought!....
I seem to make more on my comments, but I know that is because I am still learning how to do this blog thing...
and like you I think most of my followers come from my comments...
I am happy to make a penny on a comment,I am not on here to get rich quick, but to support this site and help others make a better world, with less corruption in politics ,and to spread the knowledge of how to do things better than we are doing ....
just trying to make a better world one day at a time...
namaste!

"just trying to make a better world one day at a time..."
this

share knowlege, get knowlege and make some crypto. Sounds pretty good to me

Great point isn't it?!

You've got the right attitude and it will lead to success if you're consistent!

This:
"To sum it up I earn more through commenting and I have more fun"

Interesting post....I would like to improve in this area...thanks for the reminder

Congratulations on the success you get from comments and upvote. I am amazed with you. You are a great person. I like you too. I will follow every good trick in commenting. Congratulations brother, hopefully your future is more successful than the present. You are amazing and have potential and talent in writing. Thankyou. I have much to learn from you. I am happy to follow you.

I have nothing to say ;)

Hmm! OK, I know, I'll upvote you for your honest!

I have yet to make a huge number on any comment I write, but I see some comments earning $3-4 every once in a while, which totally makes it worth it in my opinion. The best part is that I get paid some dollars to interact with interesting people, so it's really a win-win! I don't see myself getting number anywhere close to @eric-boucher anytime soon, but it's still usually profitable to spend a few minutes to write a comment most of the time.

Blessings to you. Your comments are appreciated. The value of your opinion is greater than the rewards earned. Inspiration is worth more by itself. If you've got the time... comment!

You are doing great and keep in mind that @eric-boucher is 1 year into this journey and has a lot of Steem Power!

Thanks :) Yeah, I'm still pretty new to commenting, but man, I'm have a lot of fun by discussing and talking to people here! Steemit feels much more like a socical media platform after I starter to comment on some regular posters, than it did when I mostly just made my own posts and responded to the comments I got :)

Great post, thank you for sharing - very interesting indeed. I tend to struggle to make time for commenting but not only can it be profitable I think it's also the quickest way to build up valuable relationships. Upvoted and resteemed!

Thanks @daisyd. Enjoy what you're doing and you'll succeed!

Commenting can definitely pay off sometimes. I have a couple comments this week that have earned more than $10. Sometimes my posts don't even get that much, luckily not that often though :-)

By the way, hope you enjoyed the weekend off. I did a 24 hour Steemint Disconnect on Saturday which you kind of inspired.

That's great news about your commenting. Cool to read about your disconnect! Mine was great but I love being back!

I always had a doubt in mind about upvoting my own comment.
I used to do it many times because it gets the comment on top!
This was very informative!!
Thank you <3
Upvoted!! :)
Have a beautiful day!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Thanksyou and have a great one as well!

Let me find out the truth by commenting on your post....

it worked at least to some extent!

Not bad at all congrats to @eric-boucher thats a genies and inspiration right there you have to pay to play!

Thanks for mentioning @eric-boucher. He's inspired many!

Steemit is great because the platform provide many innovative ways to earn , so no need to complain...good post indeed

""no need to complain" So True

Great, moreover steemit gives us the opportunity to connect with great bloggers...Hence why I am following you in order to get more posts from you and stay in touch. Lets stay in touch, and keep up the good posts.

i love jumping on different subjects and learning different stuff.

Learning is a great reason to be on Steemit!

I tend to avoid upvoting my own comments in order to save my voting power for upvoting other things. I suppose I could vote them up at a lower percentage though...

I'm kind of on the other side of the spectrum. I sometimes need to upvote some of my comments in order to prevent the voting power to be at 100 %. I guess I'm not that good of a curator compared to other users here.

Can't you use the slider bar to set the weighting?

Yes, but I'm only voting with 100 % at the moment, so I still need to do this every now and then, especially when I'm busy and don't have much time for Steemit. However, this will no longer be a problem once the next hardfork comes.

What in the next hardfork will make a difference?

A 100 % upvote will be worth 4x times as much, but will also drain 4x the Voting Power. So after the hardfork you only need to vote on 10 posts with 100 % power to drain your daily voting power, compared to 40 100% votes as of now.

This will allow people who vote with 100 % voting power to give the post or comment a lot more money than it does now.

Thanks. That is very informative. :)

No problem, I'm glad to help ;)

Should be cool to experiment with!

Yes, you bring up some good points. Use them judiciously and follow your strategy and inner compass.

So far, commenting has been mostly what I do here on the steemit platform. It just goes along with surfing around and meeting new friends. In a wallet stand point I'm not rich by any means but I'm shocked at just how much "is" there. I'm not here for the money anyway but it is a bonus. Commenting DEF. works and is a lot of fun. My following grows each and everyday which is surprising to me due to not having posted my own content near as much but I'm thankful for them. I do up vote my own comments from time to time and see nothing wrong with that. I got that actually from your original post on this subject. In the end for me its about enjoying the steemit, meeting new friends and learning new things! Enjoyed!

This:

" I'm not here for the money anyway but it is a bonus."

A comment can sometimes earn you more than a blog post :) And as you point out, it gives you exposure. I've got quite a few followers after leaving a good comment or engaging in a discussion. Thanks for sharing this.

This is where it's at!:

"I've got quite a few followers after leaving a good comment or engaging in a discussion."

I've had one good payout on a comment that i know of!! I was highly surprised!!

Way back in the day I once got $90 on a comment!

WOW!!

I have a had a few comments payout a couple of dollars,it was a vary nice surprise when I got the payout! One thing I really like about Steemit, and I think it is a result of the transparency as well as reward system, is that most comments in my experience are positive and respectful. Not only that but the quality of content in the comments is high as well. This is one of the main reasons I love Steemit!
Thank you for encouraging great comments with your posts and payouts!
Have a great day! :)

Thanks for sharing this:

"most comments in my experience are positive and respectful."

I don't think that many of us would be here without that aspect!

Of course!
There is such a different vibe on Steemit relative to other socials, the platform is very positive and constructive in a way I just haven't seen anywhere else.

That sounds like the theme to a great article that you're about to write!

I think you are on to something!! :)

Glad you are back!

What Do You Think?

Have you realized that commenting is a great way to earn on Steemit? Yes

Are you beginning to get noticed by your comments? Dunno

Are you surprised to see the high total paid out for comments on some posts? No

Such BIG BOLD answers! Nice!

Maybe one of my last answers in bold or not bold on this platform - thanks for your support.

all actions done in STEEMIT are important as long as they add value to the process....

So true! Add value! you hit the nail on the head!

best wishes. !!

Hey there , on last month its like i am full time steeming hehe . Its really fun and yes i comment like a lot . Didnt chek the rewards based on comments but maybe i will now :) Idk if will be the same after te fork with so less votes :)

Good point about the hard-fork. It will be intereting to see how things go!

I like to comment on posts that I like. This primarily sets up an attitude and communication between people. After all, how can you understand about a person without talking to him. And already in the second, commenting is a great way to get a good reward. I just sometimes read the post just do not know what to write to me, I just liked the post and that's it. In that case, I just vote for the post and go on.

Good strategy. Do what feels good and enjoyable to you!

Really interesting post, dear @kus-knee ! Yes, commenting is a great way to earn on Steemit and not just for the payut of the comments, but also for the engagement that can help to grow up our "active" followers ^^ I'm not surprised for the high total paid out some some comments, because some comments are very good and full of informations like one single post ^^

Commenting is a BIG part of Steemit!

I totally agree ^_^

Hi @kus-knee, great share! I am a relatively new blogger and just joined. It would be awesome if you would check out my latest post and hit the follow button if my content interests you. Thanks!

Welcome to Steemit and I wish you a lot of enjoyment!

Interesting stats @kus-knee . I have only been on this platform for 15 days but I had instantly realised the potential of commenting. I feel that for newbies this is the best way to move forward given that the reach of our posts is low. It is the best way to engage and be known in the community :)

"It is the best way to engage and be known in the community :)"
Great Points!

Great post @kus-knee ! I quite often up vote my comments to move them to the top , especially in contests if I want or need up votes on it to win ! LOL ! That was one of my tips in my latest post about my past 11 months on steemit , with tips ! If you get a chance heres the link !
https://steemit.com/steemit/@karenmckersie/my-steemit-experiences-tips-after-11-months-on-steemit-many-original-photos-from-my-posts-july-to-present

I've been a little guilty of just reading, upvoting and not commenting lately. I should probably work on whatever is making me lazy away and get back to the basics.

It is very difficult to keep up. I perfectly understand you!

This post received a 13% upvote from @randowhale thanks to @kus-knee! For more information, click here!

Such a dilemma. Months ago, there were discussions about this topic and evidence that upvoting your own comments would raise your reputation numbers faster. I set out to try it for a month, but I just didn't feel good about it. I upvote a lot of folks as a way to encourage content that I like to read, and to cultivate community. My voting power is usually on the verge of dropping below 50%. It seemed like voting for myself reduced my ability to cultivate community.

Maybe I should have upvoted myself, to raise my SP, and then distributed my own custom rewards. I can see a couple examples where people respond well to that - wild cards, bones, and more. ; )

But as more people come onto Steemit and as there's more downvoting of posts by some with a lot of impact, I may change my tune. I think it will depend on how my posts end up performing, what other people do after HF19, and even how community building efforts like SteemTrail are seen as good or bad. Or maybe I carve my content out in the last few hours before the payout period and edit options end. There was a push for that months ago, too. I did it for awhile and ended up with people registering for Steemit just to ask me to re-post something. (And that says something about how well Steemit posts can rank in Google search that someone outside Steemit finds a carved out post from a search!)

Well, it's just great to have you back! I hope the time off did you well.

I am a relatively new steemian and I tend to comment more than I post and there is a very simple reason for that. I find it much easier to share my opinion as a reply to a topic and a conversation that is already going on than to try to start one on my own.

Of course, I'm sure it's also a good way to start building some following and more importantly friendships and relationships with other people on the platform. Engagement is what turns a platform into a community and this is what I want to be a part of.

Another valuable pearl by @kus-knee in the steemit crown!

The problem is that I am always late to posts that are trending in the end. And even when I am part of the first few, my vote is diluted so much that the reward does not meet the threshold of 0.0001 SP (nice to find out after 1.5 weeks ...).

I hope the fork HF19 will make this a little better for the absolute beginners.

I am experiencing a natural shift to commenting any way, as conversation is nicer that upvoting for money. The network that I build that way, is more valuable to me than voting power.

Glad I saw this post. It can be very overwhelming when you're new here to learn the ins and outs. I'll go back and read your previous article too.

One thing I haven't figured out yet is what happens to the older content? It seems like only new posts are available for browsing. What happens if there has been a payout on a post, but activity starts up on it again say a month later. Is there another payout or only the initial time?

Seems like there is a lot of great content here, but not easily found if it's not brand new. I'm sure there is A LOT of evergreen content that would be worth being found.

always love commenting this is why my posting score is so high for an account that is so new. It's one of the biggest reason why I joined steemit ..it allows me to create , express and share.

Indeed only commenting cheers me up on this wonderful community. As for me, i prefer saving my steem power for another person's attractive comments and articles. I love the way the community is flowing in supporting each other.

As i do not find myself enganging a lot on the steemit chat, i really prefer commenting to posts that interest me. Chatrooms are just too fastpaced for me and never really liked it from the beginning. Commenting on posts however, can start relevant conversations and even end up on a follow me-follow you back relationship because you found something common amongst yourselves. And yeah, how can I forget the earnings that also add up when somebody upvoted my comments?!

Very good points and so useful! Thanks @kus-knee. This is very encouraging for me in my efforts to comment daily on other's work. Sometimes it can be easy to get discouraged but this just reaffirms the value that commenting adds to the platform and how important it is.

Steemit has encouraged best writers by upvoting their article and contents... we should be ethical and positive in our job...then there will no problem at all...

@kus-knee. Hmmm. Interesting. I have found that I just participate in comment-chat conversations that interest me and the rest pretty much takes care of itself, or it will eventually.

good post

I think comments are a lot easier to do, build community and give more of a feel of everyone's personality. I like the notion of voting on your own comment if someone else votes for it first. I also like to vote for people that make engaging comments on my posts. I feel like it is a win, win for us both.

Commenting should be worth the most in my opinion as it usually provides the greater insight to the post and allows for questioning.

Thanks for these important tips!

My confusion about the upvoting is deep as a 6 day minnow!
The whaleshares giveaways flame you for self-upvoting as per one whales' rant in a post.
Please explain to me my voting power I read the FAQ but I'm still confused, I've never seen my voting power at anything other 64%.

Good point. Most writers love reading their comments, and if you say some intelligent and contextual, they are bound to reciprocate. I'm going to recommend this to a friend that's even newer to SteemIt than me; some newbies are hesitant to do their first post, but they probably aren't aware that commenting earns too!

Also, hope you enjoyed your time off in Italy!

Lovely
