Commerzbank turns on the charging screw! The free current account will no longer exist from 1 October 2020. As the "Bild" newspaper currently reports, if bank customers do not have a regular cash receipt of at least 700 euros, they will then have to pay 9.90 euros a month for their account.
Commerzbank removes free current account
Existing customers, however, do not concern this fee change. "There is currently no change for existing customers as of 1 October," says press spokeswoman Ines Henning to the "Picture." However, the new charges are by no means the only changes to come into force on 1 October. Furthermore, Commerzbank new customers have to pay minus interest starting at 100,000 euros. So far, the limit has been 250,000 euros.

38 banks in Germany still offer free account without fees
If you are looking for alternatives to Commerzbank's free current account, you still have a wide selection. According to consumer portal Biallo, there are still 38 accounts that are really free of charge, according to consumer protection standards. These have no account management fee, no minimum money receipt in certain amount, no fees for the Girocard (EC card) and they offer free transfers.
Various banks only introduced a free account in 2020
While Commerzbank is abolishing its free current account, other banks have reintroduced free accounts in 2020. According to "Bild," this is the case with the Hypovereinsbank and the Plus account as well as with the Raiffeisenbank in the Hochtaunus and their-only account. Furthermore, VR Bank Bad Salzungen, the Spanish Openbank and Volksbank BraWo (Braunschweig/Wolfsburg) recently introduced free accounts.
