Ready to Race - Plantar Fasciitis
You could have a great run, you could feel good. you wake up, you feel great. You're in bed and you're like, "I'm going to have a great day today!" And then you put one foot down and it's like this sharp, stabbing pain in your foot. I am almost 99 percent sure that that is plantar fasciitis.
It's hard to rest your foot. I mean, you can't really get around without walking. Right? And so it's really hard to get to go away without taking some pretty stern measures. And so, people are tempted to try to run through it and just work it out. And that doesn't often go too well. So what do you do? You've really got to wind down your training a little bit.
It's hard to push through your training program and not have this be an issue. Check your shoes for the proper amount of stiffness. So there's something that I call the "finger test." So essentially you can take two fingers on the heel and toe of your shoe and if you can fold that shoe in half it is probably not an appropriately supportive shoe for you. A part of the treatment that we go through is the stretching of those calf muscles, like I said, the tightness can be an issue. The other things that could be helpful are things like ice massage over the foot. So you can try to take one of those cheap, plastic water bottles that are about this big around, fill it and then freeze it and roll that back and forth over your foot.
And you may want to try some over-the-counter orthotics, things like Superfeet that have what is called a "heel cup." So you will want to make sure that when you are looking at that orthotic that the heel portion has kind of a built-up wall around it. .
