The Old Dog Explains: The Proper And Ethical Use of Photos on Steemit!

in community •  7 years ago

We all love to use stunning images to beautify our blogs or to enter in photography contests. It is however important to make sure that if the pictures are not ours we give proper attribution to the actual owner and make sure that we are allowed to use their photograph!

The reasons for this should be obvious, being honest and giving credit where credit is due!

In This Short Video you Will Learn Two Important Things:

  • How anyone can easily discover if a photo is actually yours
  • Where to get photos by others that you are allowed to use

Please remember that on Steemit alone there are many great articles regarding attribution and on where to get photos for your blog posts!

Please Find my Story on Dtube.video

DTube.video is an amazing platform that integrates with the Steem blockchain and vloggers can monetize their videos! Awesome!

I hope that you found this article/video helpful and if there are any other subjects that you're wondering about please let me know. I'd love to help you if I can!

Until next time,

Great topic and well explained. Sometimes it's just a question of not knowing that you simply can't use every image as your own, so it's good that you pointed it out. The important thing is to check out the image license, and to know that EVERY image as his own license (even yours). Thanks for sharing!

I talented man like you can always create his own images so no worries!

I'm totally agree with your words @kus-knee:
**The reasons for this should be obvious, being honest and giving credit where credit is due.
Definitely pictures need appreciation. And people give them, but if this appreciation doesn't pass to the owner then its dishonest. I always give the link if i get some pictures which is not mine. Thanks for your advice.

A Big Salute For Sharing a Great Video!

Here is some personal thing dear @kus-knee for you, I hope you will be happy to see this love from me:
Whenever you say old dog, this picture come in my mind:

Old Dog

That's not a bad image to have!

Yeah I know. Next time I will come with some enhancements in image for you @kus-knee. Cheers!

Hi there, really got a lot of information from this video. I will be able to use tineye for researching items that I find for my ebay business. Really glad you shared the site as it will help me no end. :)

That's good to know. I'm glad that it helped you!

Thank you for this video. Unfortunately, plagiarism is a real problem on Steemit (and the internet as a whole), and I agree that Tin Eye is a good tool for checking out suspicious images. I would caution people who are checking for stolen images to really take a close look at the results though, and not just assume that a photo is stolen because it is found several other places on the web. Photography is a just a hobby for me, but I do have a few photos available on microstock sites (including royalty free ones like Unsplash). I checked one of my Unsplash cycling shots on Tin Eye and found 71 results. Many of them credited me, but many did not. I also found a couple of examples of my photos that were ripped off from sites like Flickr or Photoshelter. In each case, you can find where I posted the image originally if you do a little digging, but it’s certainly not fair that plagiarizers are bringing the work of honest people into question.

Maybe it’s just me, but why would anyone even want to take credit for something they didn’t even do? Better to spend that energy actually creating something that you can really be proud of.

Great info here from a Steemer that I respect!

Thanks so much! It's definitely an issue that tends to get me a bit worked up.

There is a reason I call you my wise man. Your posts are always great. I love reading them. I am a blogger from my pre-Steemit time so I know a thing or two about use of images. I do not know all but I know that sites like Pixabay.com can provide every kind of free to use images.

I use Canva.com to create post headers (thumbnails) for my posts. Readers can check my blog. The site contains free images already.

Thank you for covering this important topic. I am resteeming it for consumption of my followers.

Yes I had a look at your posts about the Steemit economy and I noted your use of canva.com. Thanks for this great information!

Always a great feeling to be able to converse with people like you.

This was so helpful! Thanks for sharing!

This is the first video I heard as if in my own language. You have perfect pronunciation and a very pleasant voice. And you give a lot of useful information!

Oooh @tanata thanks so much!!!!

Yes people need to know the info. However, they need to care as well. .

True!

I am a blogger and it is sometimes difficult to put original images of your making in your blog post and that is why I search images that is related to the content that I'm posting in my blog. Even though the images are for free to use, I put credits on it if where did I get the image and the who is the owner.

It is actually a good video where you can get very important information that you can use for your blog. Thanks for sharing your video.

Thanks so much for having a look and for showing on your own blog the correct way to give credit for an image.

This is actually a great topic you have chosen to make a video about as the creator of those would also need the proper credit for it copy pasting others photos in post is not a great idea :)
Thanks for sharing about reverse image search i use search image for google option :)

A few have mentioned the google search. Thanks I'll check it out!

That's a very useful video. At times, I thought that I was listening to Paul aka Lord Vader (he knows lol) who I met yesterday for the first time. :))))
It's very important for all people at steemit (writers, artists, photographers etc.) to give credit when they use pictures, quotes, writing content etc. from someone else. If you don't give credit, you pretty much steal their own worth, which is totally immoral and disgusting.

Due to the fact that I work as a freelance writer for the past 5 years, I've known of this specific "unwritten law" since day one! It's a good thing that you enlighten people about this matter though as it's really crucial.

Btw, here's a fun fact for you. A dude once left a comment in one of my articles (I think it was Listverse the site I was writing for at the time), which pretty much was a quotation by Plato: "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." I was like, "Wow, I love this quote. It's my favorite of Plato." He was like, "No!!!!! I just came up with it now." He left another 6-7 comments trying to convince me that it was his own comment. Some people....

Thanks for your informative comment and the story about the Plato quote. It's very interesting to know that you've been working as a freelance writer for 5 years.

Very helpful and kindly demonstrated video. I have read some posts lately that have been a little harsh and judgemental on this subject so I appreciate your approach. It was educational for those who might not otherwise know how or what sites to visit as well.

I have an aversion to harshness and I think that kindness and dignity almost always work better. Thanks for your visit and your support!

I think it's easy to forget that there are real people on the other side of our computer or cell phone screens.

After watching your video and reading the words in your comments on many posts , I wanted to tell you that I appreciate the respect and patience you have shown many on here. You are a good mentor.

Excellent post dear friend @ kus-knee, I share your opinion, in my particular case I try to use my own images or otherwise I work with pixabay there are good quality images and they are free. thank you very much for all this information I wish you a great day

Thanks for leading by showing a good example to us!

One other question I have. Is there a etiquette or right way to get permission to use an original photo from another steemian? I often am inspired to write poetry in my comments and wish on occasion reuse my poetry as a post. it would be nice to ad the original photo from where it was inspired.

I think that in almost all cases they would be happy if you attributed the image to them by using a link and mentioning their user name. That actually helps them. If you have a doubt you could always pm them.

Great information. I have occasionally upvoted photo posts and then realised that they are not the posters own work. So I regularly now check with Tineye. Tineye also has a browser extension that adds a "Search Image on Tineye" option when you right click on an image.

They have an extension for Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome and Internet Explorer and a bookmarklet that will work with any JavaScript-enabled browser and any operating system.

Thanks so much for this extra information and input!

You're welcome.

The article is really helpful in correcting and advising. I have this question,

How can i can i directly get the url of any downloaded picture into steemit post.

I do download from google direct and to state my source most of the time are not really truthful because i don't know how to go about it.

Good point. I'll try and do a short video on that.

This is very important for success at Steemit, a great post.

Thanks so much for your kind visit!

You are welcome my honest friend

Although I hardly understand your language, I watched the video to the end with interest. I admit that I also suspected that there was something wrong with those photos. I always try to use my photos at myself, and if I do not have one, then I search for a suitable one on the Internet and I give a link to it. It's simple)). You have a nice voice). Good luck and patience to you!

Thanks for your visit. There are all types of English accents and depending on what we are used to others are difficult to understand, especially for non native speakers.

Smart to explain that you can't use every image. People might can get in serious trouble if they just use every picture. Great video and learned another thing. Thankyou very much

Honesty is a power. We should give credit to the owner/creator of a picture if we to use their pictures on our blogs. I totally agree with you. Thanks, @kus-knee for this helping video guide.

Awesome that you focus the attention of a lot of people on this subject :) diminishing plagiarism is necessary to ensure the platform's high quality.

you create a great post.....i like it...i hope everybody like your post...thanx for shear it

I enjoyed watching the video and very educative. Nice one

Well done bro

this is very nice post

this post really helps. Because i realised i didn't know which photos i was entitled to use when i was making my first post on steemit, so i decided not to use any until i knew for sure

It is about writing without any expectations of UPVOTES..
Excellent post good analyses thanks for sharing. happy new year
thanks for sharing

I almost always use my own photos and artworks. Very rare when i use other photos, but always white the source.

The issue you raised in your video is Really Really informative and much needed to make the steemians aware of this fact. This thing will defiinitly bring Quality here on steemit.

I am convinced that you always Teach me new things to improve my quality by letting me know about the new things here on this Community.

You are doing best at your end and I will contribute at my end Too

Lets make this platform a place of Brotherhood and Peace together @kus-knee

Stay Blessed, Steem On!

photography is always good
but it is success when you doing this work in full attention
thanks for sharing

Hmmm... Never tried tinyeye before. I thought you can do the same with searching image on google. Maybe your approach is more accurate :d

Well done useful video I will resteem this post

wall i think really need this naver understand how to use proper photos

Thanks for the post! I think when a person writes a post about myself - it is quite logical to use their photos. Even if sometimes they are not the best quality, but pics mainly emotions. As an example in my post as I two days ago, swam in ice-hole on Epiphany. The look on my face must see))))
But if this post is General information - you can use photos from the Internet, but you need to specify the link. In contests I often saw pictures from the Internet, and the author of the post presented them as their own!

Very nice photography....just awesome

thanks a lot~ so helpful!

Thanks for the advice! Really you tell the truth. Only occasionally can a photo be stolen, that nobody will understand whether it or she copied anyone or it no.

Good video 👍👍👍
I like it
if you have free time please visit my blog upvote and follow me

Giving image credit to whom it is due is one of the most ethical things to do as a blogger. Thanks @kus-knee for the reminder.

Very good post

this information was very useful. I learned a lot, now, put into practice, excellent publication, thanks for giving us good tutorials

Knowing the source is what i have been finding so difficult to do. Have always been trying to know how to go about it but i seems not to find my wag through it. i need you to teach me. Thanks for this informative article.

Damn, I thought 23 results from one search was intriguing.
Then I saw the 200 over results one. Some of the people are trying to be smart now. I've seen some that steal a photo and flip it horizontally and post. No hesitation in sending it over to steemcleaner when I found.

New bloggers must learn to properly attribute photos because some photos needs a proper attribution and some are not because they are for sale for example.
Most of the time we just have to cite the source of our used phtos if those were not ours.

That is good that you share this with us.I could learn a lot from that.Thank you
-cheers-

Thank you so much for sharing

On steemit some new users are blatantly violating others copyright. I Hope this video and a series of other videos help to understood that they should post only what they own.

useful video thanks for share.

I need to be more conscience of this. I have used a youtube link from time to time in the past but obviously I should be doing more. Could you give me that image reversal and pixiday links below? Thanks. Good info to safe guard.

many people use others pic in the contest to win this is not ethical but you showed them the right path :)

Thank you for sharing a new topic about steemit with us today, I learned a new thing through your video today

anyone could easily discover that technology is really advanced

Learning... i have learnt this... thank you

The proper use of images are to be used like that very helpful for everyone on steemit great and an educational video sometime we learn from basic things :)

I agree with you. Creating or clicking beautiful images is not a piece of cake it takes a lot of effort to take a perfect shoot.
Its really unfair not to mention the owner of the image. We must give credits to the owner because everyone needs to be appreciated for their good work.
Thank you for talking about such an important topic.

Tin eye, that's a really interesting tool that I didn't know about it. Thanks for sharing the tips. I hope that this post reaches the largest number possible of people for the success of the Steem community.

Oh very timely. Now I know where to go to check images. :)

So do I use pixabay.com or pexels.com. I did not know about www.tineye.com, it is very helpful. I like your video, you explain very well.

Purtroppo su Steemit l'80% delle foto è presa dal web. Poi fanno partire il bot...e arrivano tanti soldi con le foto rubate dal veb. Questo è il vero scandalo di steemit

I think you are doing a great job here, the patience how you explain it all, i am a teacher in real life and i think you sure have the skill to be a great teacher , thank you for the time you take

Sage advice @kus-knee, and I wish more people would pay attention to it, especially since here on Steemit they are often getting to profit from stolen images. Not cool!

Of course, I tend to bypass the whole thing by only using my own photos... as relevant or IR-relevant as they may be. That way there's no mistake. And now, I need to go take some original pictures of moss...

oh this is very useful to us..thanks for sharing :)

Right, copy and paste is a big problem. I do not understand why people do not leave a source link. This is so easy and gives appreciation to the creator.
