Has Charity become a Money Spinner?

Charity should be merciful. Giving, supplying and caring without recourse. Charity is family with Hope and Faith: a Trio of beautiful sisters. They give and serve without question. A nod of the head, a tear running down the cheek or a loud cry of thanks is the blessing they receive from those in dire distress and need. I believe in small charity efforts in the local community. The operational cost and controls are being put to greater productivity and keeps the community together when charity blossoms. This is the one side of the coin.

The flip side of the coin has many faces and is controlled by what the budget allows. Sponsorships, professional fundraising and administration comes at a high premium. The Lotto version of charity generated is proof of spinning money with a smaller percentage reaching the needy. A friend of mine who is surviving on a negligible grant was planning to cook a stew for his family and needed carrots and a piece of cabbage. A charity organization operated a low cost meals programme nearby. He sent his request to the manager in charge and had an immediate reply: sorry we can't help. Even so the stew with three potatoes, two onions and less than half a kilogram brisket served on rice was a meal enjoyed by him and his family.

Charity should be wholesome including food for the broken spirit. There is a big difference in placing a bag of groceries at the front door or knocking at the door and handing the good news to the family in need. Charity should never be sterile giving. The biggest charity of all is love... to deeply care for each other. Even the glittering super rich might be screaming out for a few drops of caring and loving charity.
