Community Series #17: Fall Festivals

in communityseries •  7 years ago

A local festival kicked off this morning, and I am excited to see how things progress over the weekend.

For the past 4 years, social entrepreneurs and students from local universities have gathered to learn from one another and fine tune their work.

The festival is a combination of training and empowering for young entrepreneurs to start businesses out of university.

This morning we heard from Meridzo Ministries which is based out of the small town (population 700) of Lynch, Kentucky.

Lonnie Riley, who started and oversees the ministries there, gave us a picture of what 11 successful businesses in a rundown coal mining town look like.

If you’re wondering how a town of 700 supports 11 businesses you’re not alone. In the Q&A session someone ask Lonnie that very question. Lynch, Kentucky has over 5,000 visitors to their town each year for the world class coffee shop and for curious people to see how the model can flourish in their hometown.

Coupled with the line up of speakers, there is a business plan competition where several thousand dollars is given to the winners.

The Foundry made it into the top 10 during the pre-judging stage, and we’ll know tomorrow evening whether we won or not.

Hopefully, the Steemit account I started for The Foundry is approved this weekend and we can have a grand celebration with the Steemit community.

What local festivals are you attending in your area this fall and winter?

Well, with Trump in office that run-down coal mining town ain't gonna be so run-down any more. As Dylan says, you don't need a weathervane to tell which way the wind blows. I've been to Ohio and smelt those fumes - it's an ill wind, my friend.

To my knowledge, there is no desire to restart coal mining in Lynch. The townsfolk know the dangers of black lung, and they are content starting profitable businesses that can pas to the next person.

good, I'm glad, lydon

I need to find some festivals like this in my neck of the woods! :D

😄😇😄

@creatr

pretty awesome to know that's cool :)

Thank you. :)

Entrepreneurs are the future.

Quite true.

Are you into self development books at all? Just curious.

Yes, I am. Reading Cashflow Quadrant from the Rich Dad series at the moment.

My favourite is The Science of Getting Rich. https://www.facebook.com/cillieheretohelp/videos/1937573276564892/

I can not get over how warm and nice it looks down there yet!

Well, it was, lol. Our “cold” weather of mid 40’s is starting to kick in during the day.

Hello & Cheers!! I'm a content detection and information bot. You are receiving this reply because a short link or links have been detected in your post/comment. The purpose of this message is to inform your readers and yourself about the use of and dangers of short links.

To the readers of the post: Short links are provided by url shortening services. The short links they provide can be useful in some cases. Generally their use is benign. But as with all useful tools there are dangers. Short links can be used to hide all sorts of things. Quite frequently they are used to hide referral links for instance. While not dangerous this can be deceptive. They can also be used to hide dangerous links such as links to phishing sites, sites loaded with malware, scam sites, etc. You should always be extremely cautious before clicking on one. If you don't know and trust the poster don't click. Even if you do you should still be cautious and wary of any site you are sent to. It's always better to visit the site directly and not through a short link.

To the author of the post: While short links may be useful on some sites they are not needed on steemit. You can use markdown to format your links such as this link to steemit. It's as simple as [steemit](https://steemit.com) Unlike short links this allows the reader to see where they are going by simply hovering over the link before they click on it.

This message was created by a bot. It is part of the ongoing fight against spam and phishing attacks on steemit. If you did not use short links in your post and feel you have received this message in error you can contact @fubar-bdhr on discord or @fubar.bdhr on steemit chat to report the issue.
